This Morning has been dealt a major blow after receiving 1,092 Ofcom complaints. The media regulator confirmed to Express.co.uk that the grievances were related to comments made by Vanessa Feltz about Coeliac disease.

On Monday 18 December, Vanessa spoke with an anonymous ITV viewer called Alison. During the segment, the 61-year-old highlighted Alison’s in-law suffers from Coeliac Disease. As a result, she wanted everyone to be gluten-free for Christmas lunch. However, when giving advice on the situation, Vanessa branded the in-law unreasonable.

She said: “When Alison said, ‘Oh can we bring our own food then, just food in a snackbox’, she said no. So she’s treating Coeliac disease as if it’s a potentially fatal peanut allergy and they can’t have anything with gluten in the house.

“That is completely unreasonable. That is not reasonable, Alison, at all. The thing is though, if you say to her, ‘Look, he can have gluten-free, we don’t have to, it’s not catching’, what will she say, how will she respond?”

“She’s wrong. I think you’re 100 percent right however, it’s only one day, it’s all about family, all about tidings of joy, so should you just put up with it just for the sake of peace.”

Although host Josie Gibson highlighted the dangers of cross-contamination for those with Coeliac disease, Vanessa’s comments left viewers outraged.

The independent charity Coeliac UK was also appalled by her advice and demanded an apology from This Morning for inaccurate information.

Since then, the presenter has apologised on her TalkTV show as she said: “I did not suggest that they put the Coeliac in harm’s way nor did I intend to show in any shape or form any disrespect to anyone with coeliac disease.”

During Wednesday’s instalment of the show, host Craig Doyle addressed the mass backlash that Vanessa has received.

Before going into the latest headlines, he told viewers: “Now, Vanessa you have made some news surrounding Coeliac disease this week.

“We just want to say, we will be doing more about living with the disease on the show tomorrow [Thursday] for instance.
