The Crown: Season 6 preview

Netflix has released the eagerly anticipated final ever episodes of The Crown which cover the period in the aftermath of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales up to the wedding of the now King Charles III and Queen Camilla in August 2005. One element of that era that fans have been anxiously awaiting is the beginning of the love affair between Prince William (played by Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy).

In the show, we see them encountering each other years before they dated as a young William helps his mother sell the Big Issue and Kate donates money encouraged by her mother. Indeed Carole Middleton (Eve Best) looms heavily over their romance orchestrating situations to ensure her daughter catches the eye of the heir to the throne.

In scenes that wouldn’t be out of place in a Hallmark movie, the couple attends the same college, St. Andrews in Scotland, and are shown getting off to a rocky start as William, who already has a girlfriend, manages to offend and Kate who begins dating someone else, much to Carole’s annoyance.

However, when William sees her in the now famous see-through dress in a college fashion show he is smitten and the pair are soon an item with Kate bringing him home to meet the family.

Before you can say “fairytale” they are madly in love and even sharing a house while studying at St Andrews.

However fans of the hit Netflix series were not enamoured of the way the show depicted the love story and they took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts.

A viewer with the handle @Longing2Belong commented: “Yeah I’m not here for the William & Kate storyline. This is boring AF #TheCrown.”

@MrsEricaGarza asked: “Am I the only one laughing at how the writers of Netflix couldn’t make William & Kate’s ‘love story’ interesting? (because it isn’t). Like, you all couldn’t fluff this mess out? #TheCrown.” (sic)

A fan called @Adamzx said: “I’ve always stuck by The Crown, but I can’t anymore. The finale is at points so dull it’s hard to watch because no one would ever write Wills and Kate for the screen.”

Meanwhile, @DavidOpie chimed in: “Overall, the final episodes of #TheCrown are a letdown with too much emphasis on William and Kate over other, far more interesting stories. Saying that, I did love the finale, including that rather bold narrative choice, and I’m still sad to see the show’s reign come to an end.”
