Coronation Street alum Helen Flanagan has taken to social media to question the culture of mum shaming. In a sponsored post to her one million Instagram followers, the mum of three, who split from her Bristol Rovers star ex Scott Sinclair in July 2022, posted some stunning lingerie shots and enquired as to why dad shaming isn’t a thing.

“Here’s a question… Why is mum shaming a thing but dad shaming isn’t?” she pondered. “I’ve always been and will always be such a good mum. It’s the most important job I’ve ever done!

“But I’m also a woman, and it’s been a tumultuous year and honestly, I’m just learning to look after myself and have fun along the way,” she continued. She went on to explain that each time she posts something on social media, she gets “flooded with messages calling me a bad mum or saying mums shouldn’t look or dress or behave like this”.

“Why do we have this old fashioned idea of how mums should look and dress and behave?” she asked. “Honestly, I’m happier now than ever and guess what? That makes me a better mum too.”

“I’ve always been a girl who supports other girls and to any mums who follow me going through a hard time or finding themselves again – I just wanna say I support you! Let’s leave the sexist mum shaming behind.”

While the images were part of a campaign for the lingerie brand, the words were heartfelt and she was flooded with support in the comments.

A follower called @pixinoto02 gushed: “I think you look amazing . How you look shouldn’t reflect on how you parent it’s very judgmental and im under the impression we are now in a society that says be what you want .. so you do you ! People are just jealous anyway so even if you had a frock on to your ankles and your chin that would upset someone . I’m sure your children will be extremely proud of you ..” (sic)

Someone using the handle @mrsrfirth agreed chiming in: “I normally wouldn’t comment on things but it’s made me so angry seeing the hate you have received. Why does underwear or woman’s bodies shock people so much!? We all wear underwear. It’s nothing to do with who you are as a parent. It’s showing your girls to be proud of your body and to work hard. Please don’t let these horrible people who get a kick out of spreading hate bother you. They are the ones with truly sad lives. Jealously too probably.”
