SHETLAND viewers claim they were left bitterly disappointed by the show after last night’s episode, leading some to “give up” the new series.

The criticism comes after Douglas Henshall’s DI Jimmy Perez left the series last season. He has now been replaced by Ashley Jensen’s DI Ruth Calder.

In the fourth episode of the new series, which aired on BBC One at 9pm last night, DI Calder continued working with DS Alison “Tosh” McIntosh (played by Alison O’Donnell) to solve the murder of Ellen Quinn (Maisie Norma Seaton).

Last week, the detectives caught Peter (Sandy Grierson) and took him into custody. He claimed he was performing funeral rites to honour Ellen out of long in keeping with the practices of an ancient religion. However, Tosh is convinced he’s the killer and prepared to charge in last night’s episode.

As she tries to find enough evidence to charge him, she and Calder stumble upon a second suspect who they believe could be his accomplice. They later track him down and make a startling discovery.

Meanwhile, the episode reveals that Calder may have a much closer connection to the murder victim that she thought and that her sister-in-law Amma (Nina Toussaint-White) might have been involved in Ellen’s death after she admitted she saw her on the day she died.

The episode leaves viewers with more questions than answers. However, after watching this latest instalment, many viewers took to X, formerly Twitter, to blast the BBC series for its predictable storyline.

Following the fourth instalment, fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the series so far, and while many love Ashley as the new female lead, others are unimpressed with the storyline.

“Losing a bit with the new Shetland, bit predictable,” one commented.

A second viewer said they were struggling to follow it. “It grieves me to say it, but we’ve given up on Shetland. Just no idea what’s going on,” they said.

“It started so good. So promising. Now drifting and rambling,” added a third viewer.

A fourth viewer complained that the characters’ backstories are not as well rounded as they were in the past. I’m sorry to say that Shetland isn’t quite as good… it’s the backstories … the stuff around the characters … When was the last time Tosh talked to Donnie, her husband, or mentioned her daughter?”

Meanwhile, many other Shetland fans have been missing Douglas’s presence, saying the series just isn’t the same without Jimmy.

One viewer pleaded: “Come back Douglas Henshall, please. This new series is dreadful.”

Another said: “I miss that Jimmy.”

A third added: “It’s not the same without Jimmy.”

However, some long-time Shetland fans are still willing to give it a go, with many excited about Ashley’s role in the series.

“I’m enjoying the new look of Shetland just as much as the old. Possibly slightly more. The female leads are good,” praised one viewer.

Douglas left the series after seven seasons and doesn’t seem to be looking back. He’s already taken on a new stage role and starred in the Netflix thriller Who is Erin Carter? in 2022.

</picture>paradise
