{"id":143515,"date":"2023-11-25T02:12:33","date_gmt":"2023-11-25T02:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity-hub.com\/?p=143515"},"modified":"2023-11-25T02:12:33","modified_gmt":"2023-11-25T02:12:33","slug":"lucy-frazer-may-order-a-probe-into-planned-takeover-of-telegraph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity-hub.com\/world-news\/lucy-frazer-may-order-a-probe-into-planned-takeover-of-telegraph\/","title":{"rendered":"Lucy Frazer may order a probe into planned takeover of Telegraph"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer looks poised to order a probe into the planned takeover of the Telegraph and Spectator by an Abu Dhabi-backed investment fund<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Redbird IMI announced deal that would see it take control of the newspapers\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer looks set to intervene in the planned takeover of the Telegraph group by an Abu Dhabi-backed investment fund.<\/p>\n<p>Redbird IMI announced earlier this week that it had struck a deal that would see it take control of the newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Tory MPs have urged the Government to intervene, saying the arrangement &#8216;represents a potential threat to Press freedom in this country&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>And in a Telegraph column yesterday, the newspaper itself said the takeover by a fund &#8216;linked to a state not known for encouraging free expression&#8217; would concern its readers.<\/p>\n<p>RedBird IMI is partly funded by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the UAE.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/00\/78135881-12782095-image-a-136_1700698381009.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer (pictured) looks set to intervene in the planned takeover of the Telegraph group by an Abu Dhabi-backed investment fund<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/00\/78135871-12782095-image-a-137_1700698383855.jpg\" height=\"385\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Redbird IMI announced earlier this week that it had struck a deal that would see it take control of the newspapers (file image)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/23\/00\/78135867-12782095-image-a-138_1700698387279.jpg\" height=\"945\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>RedBird IMI is partly funded by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan (pictured), the deputy prime minister of the UAE<\/p>\n<p>In a written ministerial statement, Ms Frazer said she has written to the parties to the proposed deal to inform them she was &#8216;minded to&#8217; intervene over concerns &#8216;that warrant further investigation&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>If Ms Frazer decides to do so, it will trigger probes by regulator Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which could result in a more detailed investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The Telegraph, owned by the Barclay family, was put into receivership by Lloyds Banking Group earlier this year over debts of \u00a31.1billion. The bank is now selling the group \u2013 which controls the Daily and Sunday Telegraph titles and The Spectator magazine.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0Telegraph and Spectator to face control by group backed by Abu Dhabi<\/h3>\n<p>But the Barclay family has agreed a series of loans from Redbird IMI, allowing them to pay off the debts.
