He then performs the\u00a0maneuver on her.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/08\/77920591-12761151-Jeff_Hanus_spotted_the_woman_in_distress_after_she_pulled_over_a-m-19_1700210831491.jpg\" height=\"396\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Video from Hanus&#8217; truck shows the woman leave her car and then approach Hanus, who jumps out of his truck when he notices her in distress<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/08\/77921505-12761151-image-a-22_1700211149271.jpg\" height=\"421\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Hanus\u00a0then performs the maneuver on her before she walks away<\/p>\n<p>Once her throat was cleared, the woman returned to her vehicle, where Hanus said two toddlers were in the back.<\/p>\n<p>He said the woman didn&#8217;t speak with him immediately after he helped her, other than indicating that she was now OK.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It seemed she was pretty shaken up. So I don&#8217;t think she was in the mood for a conversation,&#8217; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She raises her hands up towards her throat, and that&#8217;s the international sign for choking, so I asked, &#8220;Are you choking?&#8221; and she clearly said yes,&#8217; Hanus, a retired Army sergeant from Hazel Crest, told WLS-TV.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/08\/77921503-12761151-Hanus_spotted_the_woman_in_distress_after_she_pulled_over_along_-m-27_1700211304585.jpg\" height=\"430\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Hanus spotted the woman in distress after she pulled over along a Chicago-area highway and said he acted on instinct. He can be seen approaching the woman after leaving his truck<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/17\/08\/77921501-12761151-When_she_starts_choking_he_then_has_to_act_quickly_to_save_her-m-28_1700211317349.jpg\" height=\"422\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>When she starts choking he then has to act quickly to save her<\/p>\n<p>He performed the Heimlich maneuver on the woman, twice thrusting his fists into her abdomen before whatever was choking her dislodged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Instinct took over. I try to live my life both from my heart and my gut, and that&#8217;s what was in control,&#8217; Hanus said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hanus said his interaction with the woman was a reminder of a good friend who died from choking a few years ago.
