Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "For the start of Saturday, we keep the cold conditions at first across parts of Central and Eastern Scotland, so there will be a touch of frost in the northeast of Scotland and some snowflakes over the hills and mountains, as the rain bumps into into that cold air."

In the meantime, forecasters have issued another yellow weather warning for heavy downpours today – just as Britain recovers from havoc wreaked by Storm Debi this week.

It came into force at midnight and is in place until 11am today, during which meteorologists warn: "Heavy rain may cause some flooding and disruption to travel."

The warning covers the south coast of England, including Devon, Cornwall, Portsmouth and Brighton.

The Met Office predict 10mm to 20mm of rain falling on average, while the worst hit areas could see up to 40mm.

Meteorologists added: "The heaviest rain will fall during the morning before easing and turning more showery by afternoon.

"Strong winds, gusting 40 mph near coasts, will accompany the rain."

Meanwhile, temperatures will remain chilly across the UK, with areas on the south coast just climbing to double figures in the afternoon.
