Having endured two miserable terms at Downe House where, it has been said, she was the target of school bullies, Kate Middleton was delighted to arrive at Marlborough College in the 1990s.

She excelled in the classroom as well as on the sports field before she went on to St Andrews University, where she met Prince William.

Now, I can reveal, the Princess of Wales has made a secret return visit to her beloved alma mater.

‘Catherine was here the other day,’ a source at the £46,995-per-year boarding school in Wiltshire tells me. ‘It’s been the talk of the school.’ Parents speculate that the Princess may be thinking about sending her elder son, Prince George, to co-educational Marlborough, where her sister, Pippa, and brother, James, were also pupils. Princess Eugenie, Samantha Cameron and comedian Jack Whitehall are among its other alumnae.

George, aged ten, is in Year 6 at Lambrook prep school in Berkshire, but was recently spotted looking around Eton College with his family ahead of a potential move there.

His father attended Eton, as did his uncle, Prince Harry, who wrote in his memoirs, Spare, about how it was the wrong choice of school for him.

Catherine will not join William in Singapore for the Earthshot Prize awards next month because Prince George has school exams that week. For the first time since launching the environmental award, the Prince will fly solo when he heads to Asia.

A Kensington Palace source confirmed that the Princess wanted to remain at home to support their elder son.

All applicants for Year 9 sit an online pre-test in the autumn term of Year 6, either at their current school or at an agreed centre. Eton also requests a head teacher’s report covering a boy’s academic strengths, interests and character.

Pupils are then chosen to go forward to the second stage, an assessment later in the academic year before successful candidates are offered a conditional place, pending an entrance exam sat in Year 8. Similar tests are held at around the same time for applicants to Marlborough College.

The Earthshot Prize is in its third year and the Princess has attended every event since its launch. Last December, the awards ceremony took place in Boston, USA, where Catherine presented a prize.

The couple were greeted by hundreds of well-wishers as they arrived on the green carpet at the MGM Music Hall in the Massachusetts capital,

The inaugural Earthshot Prize took place in 2021 at Alexandra Palace in London. There, the then Duchess of Cambridge supported her husband at the ceremony.

But working with text is a different side of my brain that I’ve never accessed before.’ She adds: ‘I can feel myself improving, but it’s still a challenge. It’s like climbing a mountain. I know I am going to have a few breakdowns, but in three days’ time I am going to be on the other side of it.’

Francesca Hayward in The Royal Ballet’s production of Swan Lake at The Royal Opera House on November 12, 2020

Her younger sister, Sienna, is a multi-millionaire Hollywood star. But life has been harder for fashion designer Savannah Miller, who had to sell her Gloucestershire home in 2014 after her business ran into trouble. She sold the home in Stroud for £597,000 and made little profit out of it, admitting that she and her family ‘were living beyond our means and the house was far too expensive to run. But it was a wrench to let go of it’. Now I have happier news: she has bought her dream home in the same county for £1.6 million with husband James Whewell. But billionaire philanthropist Wafic Said, 83, is far from happy. He is, in fact, steaming with fury.

In an explosive email to 150 friends and business acquaintances, he explains that he ‘wants to set the record straight’ following the publication of a memoir by George Kanaan, 76, head of the Arab Bankers’ Association, based in Mayfair.

Back in the 1990s, Said had — ‘to my great regret,’ he explains — played ‘a major part in introducing Mr Kanaan to [former Saudi Defence Minister] Prince Khalid’.

In a chapter which Said describes as ‘full of baseless allegations’, Kanaan claims that he freed the Prince from ‘a vast entourage of hangers-on’ and uncovered a series of atrocious deals.

‘Money held no value for him,’ alleges Kanaan, citing an evening when, he claims, the Prince, though not a gambler, was persuaded to join friends at a Mayfair casino.

‘He walked away from the roulette wheel [with] £70,000’ — only to give it as a tip to the man holding the door open for him as he left the casino.

Kanaan also claims overhearing a conversation between the Prince and billionaire arms-dealer Adnan Khashoggi, during which Khashoggi repeatedly insisted that he would, as promised, arrange a liaison with Princess Diana. No meeting ever materialised.

Summarising Kanaan’s depiction of the Prince as ‘malign’, Said says fraught discussions, involving lawyers, ‘led to his employment being terminated’.

Kanaan declines to comment.

Lottie Moss shows off her more angelic side
