A REFEREE support charity has criticised BBC presenter Jermaine Jenas for his comments during Sunday's North London Derby.

Arsenal and Tottenham shared the spoils at the Emirates as they battled out a 2-2 draw.

The Gunners took the lead through a Cristian Romero own goal but Son Heung-min got Spurs level just before the break.

However, Arsenal regained the lead courtesy of Bukayo Saka from the penalty spot after a VAR check.

Romero was penalised for handball, despite official Rob Jones initially waving away protests, after the intervention of the video assistant referee.

That decision left many Spurs supporters raging as they questioned the intent of the defender, who had lunged in to block a shot.

And that anger over the penalty even reached boiling point for 40-year-old ex-Tottenham midfielder Jenas, who now co-hosts the One Show, as he vented his fury on social media.

He tweeted: “Complete s***house off a referee! They’re all ruining our game!”

Jenas' social media outburst prompted a serious response from RefSupportUK, a charity dedicated to independent training, support and development of referees across the country.

The charity replied: "This is a disgraceful tweet and you should be ashamed.

</picture>RASH CRASH

</picture>FIGHT CLUB

</picture>RASH SPEAKS

</picture>LOVE AND CHERISH

FREE BETS – BEST BETTING OFFERS AND BONUSES NEW CUSTOMERS

"Your tweet encourages on line abuse of referees and considering your role on TV your employers need to give their head a wobble.

"Remember Anthony Taylor and his family were attacked at an airport because of antics such as yours."

Fortunately for Tottenham, and Jenas, the visitors produced an instant response as Son grabbed his second of the game to earn his team a point.

Jenas has enjoyed a successful switch into the world of football punditry since hanging up his boots in 2016 at the age of 32.

And now the former England international midfielder is a star in the presenting world after joining Alex Jones and Ronan Keating as presenters on The One Show in 2020.

He began his footballing career at Nottingham Forest, making his debut as a 17-year-old in January 2001.

His impressive performances at Forest helped him secure a move to Newcastle United, where he made more than 100 Premier League appearances and picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2003.

Jenas joined Tottenham in 2005 and went on to win the 2008 League Cup, defeating Chelsea in the final.

He later played for Aston Villa, Forest again and Queens Park Rangers before a series of injuries ended his career.

He played 21 times for England and was part of the squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, although he did not feature at the tournament.

ARSENAL TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: Stay up to date with all the latest transfer news and rumours from the Emirates
