A union leader has attacked Labour over the controversial Ulez emissions charging zone expansion.

Criticising Labour’s green policies, GMB general secretary Gary Smith said the party ‘got it wrong’ on new oil and gas drilling and argued it should listen to ordinary people.

The intervention from the boss of one of Labour’s biggest donors came amid criticism of Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) conference in Liverpool.

Labour has said it will block new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea, which has angered those who work in the industry.

Speaking from the conference, Mr Smith told Sky News’ Sophy Ridge: ‘Labour have just got it wrong on oil and gas. The truth is oil and gas are going to be with us for many decades to come.

‘And I think the challenge is to make the oil and gas industry make sectors dependent on oil and gas less carbon intensive.’

The GMB leader also criticised the controversial Ulez expansion introduced by London’s Labour mayor Sadiq Khan, which was blamed for the party’s failure to win the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election this summer.

He said: ‘We have to listen to the legitimate concerns of ordinary people, many of whom are struggling to get by.

‘And I listen to our delivery van drivers, our people who are doing deliveries in our city centres.

‘I listen to workers who are on shifts – to care workers in the NHS. And many of them are concerned that the way it’s been introduced could put an extra financial burden on them.

‘So we need to make sure that any transition is done fairly and that people believe they’re getting a fair and reasonable deal. And that’s not what’s happened so far.

‘We have wind farms that cost a fortune, are subsidised disproportionately by the lowest paid, and the jobs we were promised have never materialised.’
