WREXHAM have been branded as a "laughing stock" by fans after the EFL cancelled their record transfer.

The League Two outfit – owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – had tried to sign Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town on deadline day.

However, a move collapsed and the striker remained at the Sulphurites after the transfer window shut before it could be completed.

This led to the EFL to reject the transfer as the documents were not submitted in time.

Wrexham released a statement that confirmed that it would not be appealing the EFL's decision.

It read: "Having reviewed the additional information received from the EFL and considered this in the context of the submission of the documents for the transfer of Luke Armstrong from Harrogate Town, the club have determined there is no reasonable chance of success if we were to appeal the EFL’s decision to reject the transfer.

"Now this decision has been made, we wish to apologise to Luke as we were unable to complete the transfer by the deadline and Harrogate Town, who we are sure will be as disappointed as we are that the transfer will not now be completed in this window.

"The club will be reviewing the circumstances and processes that have led to this outcome with all the relevant parties."

Armstrong would have arrived at the club as a replacement for Paul Mullin, who is still sidelined after his injury in a pre-season game against Manchester United.

And fans have flocked to social media to criticise the club for not getting the business done earlier in the window.

Nice one."

A second declared: "Does this qualify as a shambles?"

A third commented: "Absolute joke this from the club. Feel sorry for Armstrong and Harrogate. We have really messed them about. Why have we left it so late and why did we not follow the rules."

A fourth wrote: "Clubs have three months to do their business yet always seem to leave it till the last moment to finish things off."

A fifth said: "Embarrassing. Had all summer to get that done."

While another added: "Why the hell did we wait until last minute to sign a replacement for Paul Mullin? Great idea that was."

TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: All the latest news, rumours and confirmed switches from the world of football

Newcastle icon Harper rushed to hospital after suffering brain haemorrhage
