President Trump on Wednesday departed for his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, to celebrate Christmas.
Trump left Washington without speaking with reporters on the White House South Lawn or on the tarmac of Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.
Before departing, Trump vetoed a $740 billion defense bill and refused to sign a $2.3 trillion COVID-19 relief and government funding bill.
Trump objected to the defense bill’s attempt to slow a troop drawdown in Afghanistan and mandate the renaming of 10 bases that honor Confederates. He said it also should have repealed Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which gives legal protections to social media companies for third-party content.
Congress is likely to consider veto override votes next week. In Trump’s absence, lawmakers also will attempt to pass legislation that boost COVID-19 stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000, as Trump is demanding.
