My nightmare tenant pitched a tent outside my house and lived there for weeks after being evicted for trashing the home | The Sun

A LANDLORD was left fuming when a nightmare tenant evicted for trashing the property pitched a tent outside his house for weeks.

Darren Bernard, 53, who owns a home on Westbourne Avenue, Hull, says that he has even been assaulted in an eviction row that has raged on for months.

John Johnston, 29, lived in the property with his partner earlier this year, before being evicted by Bernard around May/June.

Bernard says that the eviction came about when, upon inspection, he found the house in a terrible state.

The shocked landlord compared the damage to something that would have been sustained in a "prison riot", reports Hull Live.

Bernard also alleges that the tenant had not paid rent in a year, while Johnston told Hull Live he was evicted due to falling behind on payments because he lost his job.

After the eviction, Johnston was not allowed to enter the house, the front garden or the back garden.

But due to his partner still living in the property, he decided to pitch a tent in front of the building and has been stationed there for weeks.

At one point, Bernard found him re-entering the property and things soon turned ugly.

Former tenant Johnston physically attacked Mr Bernard on August 19, causing him to hit his head.

Johnston pleaded guilty to the charge of assault by beating at Hull Magistrates Court last week.

The troublesome tenant was sentenced to 192 hours of unpaid work, given a year's community order, a restraining order to keep away from Mr Bernard and cannot step foot on Westbourne Avenue for two years.

In addition, he is not permitted to go on Salisbury Street between Westbourne Avenue and Park Avenue.

Landlord and physiotherapist Darren Bernard, 53, called Johnston a "bully" that has "scared all the residents" on the street.

He said: "Over the past few months, I have been in contact with police and the local MP Diana Johnson to finally get this matter resolved.

"John is a bully that has not only assaulted me but scared all the residents on Westbourne Avenue.

"The property has been trashed over the past year and I have found windows smashed and ketchup all over the walls like there had been a prison riot in there.

"I am disappointed in how long it has taken to move him away from my house."
