Anger at a group caught partying on the roof of a hostel in Australia is just ‘jealousy’, a British backpacker said in their defence.
Peter Leggatt responded after police shut down a gathering in Sydney’s Kings Cross on Tuesday night, saying those filmed by a local TV station had no way to social distance because they were stuck in the hostel at close quarters with one another.
In a Facebook post on a page for backpackers, he said: ‘That hostel that had the party can’t social distance. Anyone who has ever stayed in a hostel or has the tiniest brain power would understand that.
‘The problem seems they dared to have fun in a time when everyone else cant. Sounds like jealousy to me.’
He said many backpackers were ‘stranded’ in Australia without their family, as they were out of work with funds running low and flights cancelled.
‘Australia is more than happy to have us here to do all the fruit picking they prefer not to do, or spend huge amounts on the tourism industry,’ he added.
‘Yet in a crisis where our humanity is desperately needed, we’re blamed and attacked by everyone, the media being the heart of it.
‘Let’s take a group of people most desperate and get everyone to blame them.’
‘I’ve seen people break down as they struggle to get home or even eat and sleep somewhere safe.’
He claimed the media had blamed backpackers for an outbreak of coronavirus at Bondi, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Bondi Beach was closed over a week ago to try and prevent the spread of coronavirus.
People in Australia have been told gatherings are limited to two people, the same as in the UK.
The group of backpackers at the hotel told police they were all resident in the same building so should be allowed to hold the party.
A spokesman for New South Wales Police told Daily Mail Australia: ‘Police spoke to and reminded to management and guests of the social distancing obligations in accordance with ministerial directions under Public Health Act.’
‘No further action was taken.’
