Insecure recently returned for season five on HBO, with the UK premiere on October 26 on Sky Comedy. Sadly, this is the beginning of the end for fans of the series, as the broadcaster confirmed this would be the final season. After five strong seasons, fans have been left wondering why the show is coming to an end now.
Why is Insecure ending after season 5?
Insecure has been a massive hit for HBO since it originally debuted back in 2016.
Starring Issa Rae as Issa Dee, the star has received multiple awards and boundless critical acclaim for her hit series.
However, five years and five seasons later, HBO confirmed that season five would be the last time fans got to spend time with the beloved characters.
There will be a total of 10 episodes in the final season, with the first episodes premiering on October 24 in the USA.
The announcement that season five would be the last came in early 2021 when Rae retweeted Deadline’s confirmation.
Rae tweeted: “Very excited to film our fifth and final season! We couldn’t have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y’all soon!”
However, Rae explained to Deadline that the show was not cancelled, it was “always planned” to tell a five-season story.
Raw explained: “We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience.
“I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least.”
The show was originally inspired by Rae online series Awkward Black Girl, with the story being expanded by HBO.
“[Executive Producer Prentice Penny] and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end,” Rae added.
Despite the show coming to an end, HBO praised the series for cultivating a loyal fanbase and for telling a “heartfelt” tale.
HBO’s Programming EVP, Amy Gravitt, explained in a statement: “Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy.
“The show is as incisive as it is heartfelt, and it has resonated strongly with its audience because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and the writers have put into it.
“This talented team has conceived a brilliant final season for Insecure and we look forward to having many more stories to tell with this singular group of collaborators.”
Fans will have to wait and see how Rae brings the story of Insecure to an end.
With only one episode aired, there is still plenty of time to go before fans will see the characters for the last time.
As for Rae, the star has plenty of other projects on the horizon, with both A Black Lady Sketch Show and Sweet Life: Los Angeles releasing in 2021.
The star is also involved in a number of upcoming TV projects, with several of them already either filming or in pre-production.
These include Fledgling, Rap S**t, Seen & Heard and Project Greenlight Revival, though none of the projects currently have release dates.
Insecure airs Sundays at 10pm EST on HBO. Season 5 airs Tuesdays at 9pm on Sky Comedy in the UK.
