Emmerdale viewers got a blast from the past tonight as Kim Tate (Claire King) made reference to her deceased husband Frank Tate (Norman Bowler).
Kim has become hellbent on making daughter-in-law Andrea suffer after she discovered that the young woman slept with Graham (Andrew Scarborough) years earlier — and the time frame suggests that Graham could be Millie’s dad and not Jamie (Alexander Lincoln).
As the pair converse in tonight’s episode, Kim makes reference to her husband Frank, but the question is: who was he?
Viewers watching the Classic Emmerdale repeats on ITV3 will no doubt be familiar with the character, given that the re-runs are directly in the middle of Frank’s tenure on the soap.
Here’s what you need to know…
Who was Frank Tate in Emmerdale?
Frank Tate was a mainstay of the ITV soap opera for the better part of seven years, and first arrived in the village all the way back in 1989.
During that year, Emmerdale underwent something of a rebranding, and Frank was introduced as the patriarch of the show’s then newest family — the Tates.
During his seven-year stint in the soap, Frank featured in several high-profile storylines, from struggling to come to terms with daughter Zoe’s (Leah Bracknell) sexuality, and of course his marriage to Kim — which was a tense one, for sure.
When was Frank Tate married to Kim Tate?
Franks wife Jean died off-screen several years prior to his arrival, but it soon came to light that he’d once had an affair with his secretary Kim Barker — aka Kim Tate.
Kim and Frank’s marriage was a troublesome one, with plenty of conflict between the two, and it came to an end in 1992 wen Kim had an affair with Neil Kincaid (Brian Deacon).
Devastated by the end of their alliance, Frank turned to drink to console himself.
However, the pair re-married two years later, but Kim once again had an affair — this time with Dave Glover (Ian Kelsey).
More conflict ensued when Kim discovered she was pregnant with James — who modern day viewers will know better as Jamie — and, although it was initially suspected that James was Dave’s son, he was later revealed to be Frank’s.
In typical Kim Tate fashion, she faked her own death and framed Frank for her murder. The shock of Kim turning up on his doorstep and revealing the truth resulted in him having a massive heart-attack, which led to his death.
Who played Frank Tate in Emmerdale?
The role was played by actor Norman Bowler between 1989 and 1997.
Emmerdale continues Wednesday at 7pm on ITV.
