Outer Banks is more popular than ever after the release of season two on July 30. Fans quickly binged the season and turned their hopes to the third season. Express.co.uk has brought together all the details on the third season of the Netflix series.

When will season 3 of Outer Banks be released?

With Outer Banks’ popularity being at an all-time high, fans are looking for any news regarding the third season of the show.

Sadly, Netflix has not yet confirmed the series for season three, but fans shouldn’t worry.

Netflix often waits a few months after the release of a season before confirming its renewal.

With season two racing ahead in the most-watched charts on the platform, it seems very likely Netflix will renew the show in the coming weeks or months.

Season two of Outer Banks wasn’t confirmed until three months after the release of season one when it premiered in April 2020.

With that in mind, the earliest viewers could expect season three to be announced is either late September or October, but this could be longer.

If it is renewed around then, a release date of late-2022 is most likely, unless production starts immediately after its announcement, taking the premiere closer to mid-2022.

Express.co.uk will update this story if Outer Banks season three is confirmed.

For now, fans will have to wait patiently for Netflix to announce season three, but with the reaction to season two on social media, the platform will want to capitalise on the momentum.

The long wait ahead has upset fans, with many of them taking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the show ahead of its renewal.

One fan wrote: “We really got to wait another year or longer for season 3 now #OuterBanks.”

“Soon better be soon, I’m not waiting another year,” added another.

A third commented: “OH MY GOD THE ENDING OF OUTER BANKS SEASON 2 GOT ME SHOOK. I NEED SEASON 3 ASAP.”

What happened at the end of season two?

The Pogues are in their worst situation so far, with the group being left stranded on Poguelandia after losing their money for a second time.

The season two finale also delivered the biggest twist of the series so far, with the reveal that John B’s (played by Chase Stokers) dad Big John (Charles Halford) is still alive.

Showrunners Jonas and Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the impact of season two’s ending and what it means for season three.

Josh Pate explained: “John B’s relationship with his dad is a huge theme and having his dad back around and eventually they’re going to meet back up and John B has to reconcile his idealised version of his dead dad with the reality of his alive dad.

“It gives us a lot of thematic father-son stuff to work with.”

It is clear the showrunners have big plans for the show moving forward and there are no signs of that changing for the filmmakers.

Despite season three remaining unconfirmed, the plans the showrunners have in store will ensure the next season will get off to a racing start.

Pre-production could be well underway despite Netflix not announcing the upcoming season, this would allow the show to retain its current release schedule.

Burke added: “We have a pretty good idea what’s going to happen,” making the announcement of season three all but confirmed.

Outer Banks seasons 1-2 are available to watch on Netflix.
