'WandaVision': Some People Are Furious About Theories Suggesting Wanda Will Become a Villain
18th January 2021

WandaVision has debuted on Disney+, and fans are excited to see what the next installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has in store for them.

While no one’s been able to decipher the plot yet, it’s only a matter of time before all the episodes will be available. In the meantime, all fans can do is speculate on Wanda’s fate. Some fans think the possibility of her turning into a villain exists, and that wouldn’t sit too well with some of them.

The MCU history of Wanda Maximoff and Vision

Much like in the pages of Marvel Comics, Wanda and Vision develop a romantic relationship during the MCU films. Their connection begins to blossom in Captain America: Civil War. When the Avengers ask Wanda to be kept under supervision at the Avengers headquarters, it is Vision who cooks for her and attempts to comfort her.

The next time we see the two heroes, it’s during Avengers: Infinity War. They’re on the run in Germany where they’re nearly apprehended by members of Thanos’ Black Order. The couple is rescued by Captain America and several others. It’s made clear that they are now in a relationship and in love. Tragically, by the film’s end, Wanda is forced to kill Vision to destroy one of the Infinity Stones.

It’s all for naught, however, when Thanos uses the Time Stone to reverse time, bring Vision back to life, only to kill him again. Wanda then perishes due to his snap.

Wanda returns in Avengers: Endgame and helps bring down Thanos, avenging the death of her partner. That will presumably lead to the events of WandaVision, the new series from Disney+.

How ‘WandaVision’ will begin Marvel’s Phase Four

Details on WandaVision are scarce, but we do know it’s modeled after classic sitcoms from various eras of TV. There’s also been speculation it will usher in the MCU’s idea of multiverses, dovetailing into the events of Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness in which Scarlet Witch has confirmed to be in.

Previews for the show haven’t revealed much, but it’s clear that both Wanda and Vision will be featured prominently in what seems like an alternate reality (or potentially, realities).

With rumors circulating about the next Doctor Strange and Spider-Man films incorporating multiverses, this show appears ready to send seismic shockwaves through the MCU in how it sets the stage for the coming films in Phase Four.

Fans aren’t sure exactly where Wanda will end up when the show’s run is complete.

Why some people are furious about rumors Wanda will become a villain

A Reddit thread of fans discussing Wanda’s potential fate on the show talked about whether she’ll become a villain. It’s a role she’s played before in the comics, and even in the MCU. In her MCU debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she and her brother Quicksilver were aligned with Ultron before joining the Avengers.

One fan doesn’t believe it will happen, stating:

“They won’t, beside Wanda as a villain is a very misogynistic trope, matt shakman himself thinks that’s lazy and [Kevin] Feige said this show is where we learn why wanda is called scarlet witch.”

The MCU has done a good job making characters realistic and believable. While they have fantastic powers and abilities, they’re all grounded in some kind of realism. That also goes for their motivations.

Whether Wanda ends up as a villain or not, it’s certain she’ll have relatable plot lines that will make her a sympathetic character. Either way, she’s grown into being a fan-favorite, and those fans definitely don’t want to root against her when the show wraps up this season.
