Nina Myskow has accused Number 10 of failing to implement the necessary measures to counteract growing cases of coronavirus, saying the Covid pandemic is not going away. The slamming came amid rising infection cases in the past week with some scientists urging for the reintroduction of Covid measures. The Government has so far insisted no extreme guidance has to be issued as they ramp up efforts to deliver vaccine boosters.

Ms Myskow said: “These are the highest death rates since March when we were still in the grip of things.

“And it seems to me there’s been a kind of open season since we had the great unlock in the middle of July

“People are going about as if the pandemic does not exist.

“And I think there’s a bit about COVID fatigue, well, tough, you know, this is where we are with it.”

She went on: “And it seems to me that the Government is actually been incredibly lax in giving us guidance.

“We should have had face masks, we should have had social distancing when we unlocked

“I know we are social animals and we need to be with people, but the consequence is death.

“The Government has decided to go with vaccination as our armour against the virus.”

She continued: “But in fact, our booster campaign is very sluggish.

“Fantastic campaign which started up brilliantly as being the best in the world almost has fallen behind we’re about 20th in the world in terms of how many people have had their second dose apart from anything else.

“And the Government seems to be just focused on cop 26 And if we don’t talk about it’ll just go with.

“Well, It hasn’t gone away and it’s not going away.”

Health leaders have warned that some Covid restrictions must immediately be reintroduced if England is to avoid “stumbling into a winter crisis”.

UK cases have been rising sharply in the past week.

Daily Covid cases have been above 40,000 for seven days in a row.

The NHS Confederation said a backup strategy, which includes mandatory face coverings in crowded spaces, should be implemented.

However, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said it was not time for Plan B yet.

He said: “I don’t want to inject any hint of complacency but I think so far our approach is working”.
