Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) plays pretend well with her enemies on the hit series Vikings. She planned her revenge to take back her home of Kattegat for years, and she waits until the right time to strike. Read on to learn why she chose revenge after so many years. There are spoilers ahead for Vikings.

Lagertha never forgives Aslaug for what she did

Lagertha was the first wife of Ragnar Lothbrok (TravisFimmel). She suffers a miscarriage and consequently, Ragnar decides to cheat onher the first opportunity he gets with Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland). Aslaug ends uppregnant with his child and he can’t turn her away.

Lagertha leaves and divorces Ragnar when he suggests theyhave a marriage between all three of them. Luckily, Lagertha lands on her feet, but she never forgets what Aslaug did. She seems to have taken it all out on Aslaugand insists that Ragnar was “bewitched” by her.

Lagertha takes back her home

Lagertha has been planning to take back her home of Kattegat for a long time. She even tells Aslaug that she could never forgive her for what she’s done. When the opportunity arises, Lagertha attacks Kattegat and takes back her place as Queen.

Lagertha acts like she’s going to let Aslaug live to see another day as she turns to leave. As she walks away, Lagertha takes an arrow and shoots Aslaug in the back. She gives her a fitting funeral celebrating her life as Queen of Kattegat even after everything that happened between them.

Why Lagertha chooses revenge

Lagertha isn’t the type to just stand by and take it. She’s proven that time and time again. She may look docile, but she’s far from it. She knows how to hold a grudge and wait for the right moment to get revenge. She takes back her home of Kattegat that she deserves after many years of careful preparation.

Lagertha was never going to let Aslaug have Kattegat, at least not for long. She takes it back and makes it a better place. Even though she has the opportunity and means to kill Aslaug’s sons, she chooses not to because they are the sons of Ragnar. Her problem was with Aslaug and no one else.

Even though Ragnar is the one who cheated on Lagertha, sheseems to have forgiven him rather easily because she was always still in lovewith him. It’s easier for her to find the fault in the woman who took her placeinstead.

Everyone seems happy that Lagertha becomes the Queen ofKattegat, except for the sons of Aslaug and Ragnar of course. All the pain andbetrayal seems worth it in the end when Lagertha takes her rightful place as Queen. She had to choose revenge to make sense of everything that happened to her.

By killing Aslaug and taking back her home, Lagerthafulfilled the Seer’s (John Kavanagh) prophecy that a woman would rule Kattegat.
