Vera returned to viewers screens this month, with Brenda Blethyn returning to her role as DCI Vera Stanhope. In the latest episodes, fans would have seen Vera chasing a criminal through a fairground. Bosses had big plans for the scene but Brenda admitted filming had to be halted when a fan interrupted.
Recounting the incident, Brenda explained: “I remember we were filming once in a fairground in South Shields.
“It took forever to set this shoot up because they wanted it to be done in one shot, and I had to run all the way through the fairground after the criminal.
“We’d got all the way down, and they filmed it all the way along, and it just happened to end near the ladies loo.
“A lady came walking out of the loo, and she went, ‘Oh Vera!’, and she rang, and she flung her arms around my neck!” she explained.

“They had to shoot the entire shot again, no one was cross I was sweet, it was funny,” Brenda added in an interview with The Gazette.
The detective drama has returned for its 11th series, with two new feature-length episodes airing on ITV.
Set in the beautiful landscapes of North East England, the first gripping case Vera headed up was the death of a well-respected local builder, Jim Tullman.
Talking about preparing for filming, Brenda explained she would often read scripts but if she could guess the killer, she’d send it back to the writers.
“If someone can guess it too early, there’s something wrong, so it’s got to be adjusted, I can’t help but pick up on stuff!” she confessed.
The actress went on to reveal she can find it hard to leave the beloved character on set.
Brenda said: “My husband always says my body comes home a month before my head, I’m here physically, but my mind is still spinning.
“I can’t leave it alone, and even after I’ve done it when you can’t change it, I’m thinking, ‘I wonder if I should have done that?”

Meanwhile, Brenda recalled causing chaos on set herself when she lost her iconic hat.
Speaking to Christine Lampard on Lorraine, she was asked: “How many fishing hats do you own Brenda, are there several replicas on standby just in case?”
Brenda laughed: “I lost it once, and we’d already filmed part of the scene wearing it, so we had to find it.
“I think it was me who lost it, but I didn’t own up to it for a long time,” she explained, looking somewhat guilty.
“But now they’ve got a few on standby, I noticed Marks and Spencer are selling them now too!” she explained.
Sunday night marked the final time Vera would air on ITV in 2021 with the series not returning until 2022.
While fans were devastated by the news, ITV will be broadcasting four new episodes early on in the new year.
Vera is available to catch up on the ITV Hub now.
