The first episode of the new series of Vera will air this weekend (Sunday, August 29), with the Geordie detective set to come back and crack some more mysterious cases. The ITV show has built up a strong fanbase, with viewers frequently heading to the set to watch Brenda in action as the iconic DCI Vera Stanhope. Brenda, 75, admitted most are very friendly, but one element of her fanbase is surprising to her.
“We did have lots of people turning up at locations to watch filming,” the actress explained.
“We always have somebody to help marshal the crowds, and the onlookers are always so cooperative. And quiet. Such nice people.
“I find the people of the North East generally very friendly anyway.
“What does surprise me is the age span of the people who come. You get older people but also younger – junior school age who like Vera.”
The OBE continued: “Their mums or dads have brought them along.
“One lad told me that young people like Vera because she’s in charge of all these men, she keeps them all in their place and she is funny.
“I’m glad they get that Vera does have a sense of humour. Apart from doing her job well.”
Series 11 of the hit drama will start on Sunday, and the new instalments are set to be as intriguing as the previous episodes.
Last year, production for the drama was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite the struggles they faced, TV bosses recently confirmed two feature-length episodes will air on August 29.
The opening episode will see Vera investigating the murder of a man who was beaten to death, and actor Kenny Doughty will also be coming back as Vera’s right-hand man DS Aiden Healy.
Brenda has been playing the role of mac-wearing Vera for a decade and was as delighted as her fans to hear of the upcoming instalments.

The actress commented: “It was hugely gratifying to hear that the people in the North East were excited to know that Vera was returning to film more episodes.
“Something to look forward to in a dismal time. I was glad to be starting work again for lots of reasons.”
The award-winning actress recently remarked: “I start work on it a month before we start filming for practical reasons, really.
“Because it’s not filmed chronologically, I have to know where her head is at any given time.”
She added: “And aside from that, I like to give my penn’orth of thoughts on the script.
“If I can guess something that’s about to happen it has to get changed because we don’t want people working it out!”
Episode one of series 11 will centre on a grisly murder, but in typical Vera style, there’s more to the case than meets the eye.
Following the first two episodes, the rest of series 11 is set to be filmed this year to air in 2022.
Vera is set to air on Sunday, August 29 at 7.30pm on ITV.
