'Titanic': The Nude Drawing of Kate Winslet Sold for Thousands of Dollars After the Film Was Made
26th January 2021

Titanic is one of the most beloved romance films of all time. The film which stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, when it debuted.

There is still such a massive cult fan following for the film, that a nude portrait of Winslet from the movie sold fairly recently for thousands of dollars.

Kate Winslet flashed Leonardo DiCaprio on their first day of shooting Titanic

Winslet was just 22 when Titanic premiered in 1997 and though she had begun making a name for herself, the movie thrust her onto the A-list. DiCaprio however, was already a massive star.

The British actor was super nervous about starring alongside The Wolf of Wall Street actor, especially because she would have to be nude in some of the scenes filmed.

To get over her nerves, she simply flashed her now-best friend.

“I was naked in front of Leo on the first day of shooting,” Winslet says in  James Cameron’s Titanic the official behind-the-scenes-book.

“She had no shame with it,” DiCaprio added. “She wanted to break the ice a little beforehand, so she flashed me. I wasn’t prepared for that, so she had one up on me. I was pretty comfortable after that.”

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s ‘Titanic’ love scenes were not romantic

As much as DiCaprio and Winslet’s characters appeared to be madly in love, the actors were very much just friends. In fact, filming their love scenes in Titanic was pretty awkward for the both of them.

“Grossing Kate out was purely Leo’s job,” Billy Zane, who plays Winslet’s stuffy fiance in Titanic, told, according to Rolling Stone. “He got really good at it. If he wasn’t rolling back his eyelids, he was making objets d’art out of bodily fluids.”

More than that, their most sensual scenes included a lot of awkward movements.  “We’d do the most ridiculous things to each other,” Winslet told Rolling Stone. “He’d be tickling me, groping me, winding me up. And I’d be doing the same thing back, sort of grabbing his bum.”

One thing that the Catch Me If You Can actor really hated was kissing his British co-star. “I can tell you right now he hated it,” she told Extra. “He would complain bitterly” she explained.

DiCaprio has his own assessment of why kissing Winslet wasn’t his favorite thing to do on the Titanic set. He says that the makeup transfer was annoying. The actors had different foundation colors, and the kissing scenes would force them back into the makeup chair for hours.

Kate Winslet’s nude drawing from Titanic was sold for $16,000

In one of the movie’s most infamous scenes, DiCaprio’s Jack draws Rose’s portrait while she is wearing nothing but the massive Heart of the Ocean necklace. The portrait was actually hand-drawn by director James Camron on the set, and in 2011 it was sold for thousands of dollars.

Premiere Props auctioned off the drawing for at least $16,000 according to Mental Floss. However, the final price nor the identity of the buyer was ever actually released.

We hope that Winslet was able to take home the portrait, it’s her nude body on display after all.
