Trailer for Tiny Beautiful Things on Hulu

Tiny Beautiful Things has just arrived on Hulu and Disney Plus and it is a small-screen adaptation of the book of the same name. Quentin Plair plays Danny Kincade, the husband of Clare (played by Kathryn Hahn), whose life is falling apart. The star spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about handling the show’s emotional scenes.

Based on the Dear Sugar column in the book by Cheryl Strayed, the series follows floundering writer Clare.

After her marriage has broken down and her daughter refuses to work on their relationship, she decides to become an advice columnist.

Yet she feels unworthy of the role considering her own life has hit rock bottom and she has faced many tragedies in her past.

She and her husband Danny are working on their marriage with the help of a counsellor, but will it be enough to save them?

Actor Plair spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about how some scenes reminded him of real experiences from his own life.

He said: “There were so many [heavy] moments, a bunch of the times in the therapist’s office I remember there were real emotions I had from my actual true life that really came out when I was connecting with her over not making it as a rock star or recording artist.

“There was some real stuff that came up in dealing with that and in preparing to do those scenes.

“There were some times where some really fun stuff came up, we had the one episode where we are on good terms.

“It was just fun and the chemistry I felt we had throughout the entire audition process and life of the show really got to flourish.

“There were so many times where things came up that were just surprising for me.

“In some of the stuff dealing with Rae [Tanzyn Crawford] as well and what it’s like to co-parent a child and not everything go just your way.

“A lot of soul-searching stuff like that came into it throughout this process.”

He also opened up about the show’s fine balance between tragedy and humour, something his co-star Hahn handled well.

He said: “For me, it was pretty easy, I knew I didn’t have to bring any humour to the table.

“I knew Kathryn had all of that, I just had to be a grounding force.

“But with bouncing things off of her, she’s such a reactive actor that no matter what I was doing or going through, I knew I could feel free in just expressing it however it came out.

“There were times when I had something to say that wasn’t necessarily initially written down or just the scene went in a slightly different way than we had expected.

“I knew whatever I did, with Kathryn opposite me, she’d be fine.

“One thing that really honed that freedom was Liz Tigelarr [creator] being as willing to work with us as possible.

“In making us part of the process and coming to us with questions.

“So I felt very free to just, if I had an impulse to just go with it, just know I was supported.”

After reluctantly taking on the role of Sugar, Clare’s life unravels in a complex way.

Through a series of flashbacks, viewers will see how her troubled past has shaped her into the person she is today.
