This Explains Why You'll Rarely See the Duggar Family Vacationing at the Beach

Whether you’ve been keeping up with the Duggar family for years or you just began recently with episodes of Counting On, it’s clear the family lives by many rules. From their strict no-touching and no-kissing policy while dating to family guidelines involving no pop music, no dancing, and no outside influence, it’s no wonder the Duggars are nothing like most of us. Even so, we love seeing what they’re getting into next — and we’re all wondering if the older Duggar kids who are now married with their own children will impose the same strict rules within their families.

There’s another guideline that the Duggars live by that many haven’t taken note of, too — and that’s that they’ll rarely, if ever, take a vacation at the beach. As for why, there’s a fairly simple explanation.

The Duggars have always lived by ultra-strict dress code rules

We may see some of the older Duggar women in jeans now, but that certainly wasn’t the case when they were growing up. In Touch Weekly reminds us the Duggars follow the very strict Independent Baptist faith, and they believe they must remain as modest as possible under the watchful eye of God. For this reason, most forms of modern dress are totally unacceptable, and they’ve created their own dress code rules that involve a lot of covering up. As Michelle Duggar’s said in the past during a TLC Q&A, “I felt like the Lord was saying to me, ‘You know what, you probably shouldn’t be wearing that. It’s a little bit low cut, or a little bit too high, you know?’ I just really felt like I needed to obey what God was saying to me first and understand later.”

Now, she and the kids living under her roof are to wear skirts that cover the knees and tops that cover everything from the neck and down. “By keeping those private areas covered, there’s not any ‘defrauding’ going on,” she added during the Q&A.

They don’t often swim because swimsuits may conjure impure thoughts

The beach requires a lot less clothing than the Duggars typically wear, so of course this wouldn’t be their vacation of choice. As Michelle Duggar told TLC, “We typically don’t go to the beach in the summertime. And in general we don’t do a lot of swimming events where swimming suits are worn because it’s just too hard for the guys to try to keep their eyes averted in those situations.” She added that when she was growing up, she didn’t realize just how revealing swimsuits really were, so she wanted to take more ownership of how she was presenting herself as she got older. And if her family members do want to go for a swim, they do it at their friend’s pools instead of in public. “And in those situations the kids are always wearing modest clothes,” Michelle added.

So, when the family members are swimming, what do they wear? According to Michelle, they seem to find swimwear that always covers the torso and thighs, as “God talks about the thigh being uncovered, and how that’s nakedness and shame.” It seems those two areas of the body are the most important to keep modest.

The Duggars even have a code word for women who are dressed immodestly

Michelle notes to TLC that people can do whatever they want with their own dress — but it seems the Duggars do have their own tactics for shaming. Cosmopolitan notes in Jana, Jessa, Jinger, and Jills book Growing Up Duggar, they discuss the code word they whisper to each other when they see an immodest woman walking by. The word is “Nike” and it’s meant to warn the men in the family to avert their gaze from the oncoming offender. “That’s a signal to the boys, and even to Dad, that they should nonchalantly drop their eyes and look down at their shoes as we walk past her… It’s meant to help keep the guys’ eyes from seeing things they shouldn’t be seeing,” the Duggar women wrote.

We’ve seen the older Duggar women branch out with their own fashion choices more and more, however, so perhaps they’ve lightened up their views on swimsuits, too. We’ll have to wait and see if anyone catches them sunbathing on the beach.
