The Larkins is the new ITV drama series which is an adaptation of H. E. Bates’s 1958 novel and stars The Chase host Bradley Walsh as Pop Larkin. Bridgeton star Sabrina Barlett who plays Mariette Larkin has spoken about the new series revealing she managed to get a black eye during the show’s filming.
Mariette attracts the attention of many men in the village but she feels the wrath of Pauline (played by Natalie Mitson) who was previously her best friend.
One scene in particular sees the women come to blows and actress Sabrina ended up with an injury of her own.
Sabrina said of her character: “Pauline and Mariette are very competitive, they always have been from a young age.
“So that sort of provokes a play for competing for both their affections, which comes to a head in the strawberry fields in episode four when we have a catfight.”

Sabrina continued: “One of my favourite scenes I think to shoot for the Larkins has been my catfight I have with Pauline in the strawberry fields in episode four.
“We’d just had some cake during our lunch break, had cups of tea, and we’re both going, oh, you know, let’s get a bit of energy up for this fight, yeah.
“Cut to ten minutes later, the whole thing was a blur, I don’t really remember it, although I suddenly remembered feeling this pain in the top of my brow.”
Sabrina went on: “And I realised that by the evening I had a black eye, which was absolutely amazing, and one of the things that I’m most proud about in my acting career has been to achieve a black eye from a catfight.
“And neither of us really remember the fight because we were so into it, and it was just so much fun. We had strawberries everywhere, hay, everybody was screaming.
“We didn’t even hear the director say cut because we were both so into it. But it was definitely one of my favourite scenes to date to shoot on anything ever, I loved it.”
Sabrina, who known for playing Siena Rosso in the first season of Bridgerton, added she was right at home in the role of Mariette.
“For me, I grew up in the countryside, riding horses and playing outdoors,” she explained.

“It was great to kind of go back to something that I understood, that was part of my life.”
The Larkins breathes new life into The Darling Buds of May with the original cast being replaced.
While Sabrina is taking over from Catherine Zeta Jones, Bradley replaces David Jason who was the original Pop.
When casting was announced, he said he was “thrilled” to be involved in the “much loved and iconic series of stories.”
Speaking about his debut on the show, Bradley told The One Show hosts Rylan Clark-Neal and Ronan Keating: “Whilst it’s still set in 1958, it’s got a modern feel, it’s shot in a modern way.
“It’s much different to the way it was shot and the way it was portrayed, years ago, People forget the original series was 30 years ago now.
“Anyone under 40 basically won’t know what that was, so we’re hoping to bring it to a new audience,” he told them.
“I’ve seen the first two, and I’ve got to be honest they’re lovely Andy de Emmony, the director has done the most fantastic job.”
“And we’ve got an ensemble cast, it’s stellar, so it’s brilliant,” he continued. “Amelia Bullmore, Peter Davidson and Tony Gardner.
The Larkins airs Sunday nights at 8pm on ITV.
