The Handmaid’s Tale season four came to a bloody end as June Osborn and other handmaids took their revenge. The finale has set the stage for an epic confrontation between June Osborn (Elizabeth Moss) and Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski). But will the two go head-to-head in season five?
Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season four.
Will June Osborn confront Serena Waterford?
Season five is expected to drop in 2022, with season four concluding with one of the most intense confrontations yet for the series.
Season four saw Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and his wife Serena Waterford venture beyond Gilead and follow June to Canada.
Once there, Fred met a grim end when he was attacked and killed by June and a group of other handmaids seeking revenge.
This has left Serena alone in Canada, however, she isn’t completely without help.
The cycle of revenge looks likely to continue in the next season, with one fan taking to Reddit to discuss what could happen in season five.
On the r/TheHandmaidsTale forum, one fan has gone into detail on how they believe the next season will go down, with June and Serena’s conflict lying at the heart of it.
First, they look at where Serena is when season four ends, starting with the fact that “she and Fred have now developed a cult following in Canada”.
The fan continues: “Plus, Serena is working on a new book. Which will be along the lines of something close to a pro-Gilead stance.
“In addition, her fame and fan following are how they introduce the Pearl Girls into the story.
“So on this side, we have Serena and her followers.”
Then they turn to June, who after taking revenge on Fred for his hideous acts during the four seasons of the show will now be hunted for her crimes.
They explain: “She will be the person who mobilizes the Anti Gilead movement in Canada.
“We see that she already has a following with people who have fled Gilead to Canada.
“Furthermore, June’s ranks will grow the more Serena opens her mouth and spouts the pro-Gilead approach to Canada and the World.”
It looks clear that the path to war is now inevitable, with Gilead continuing to destabilise due to the events of the series.
The plot details of season five remain unknown, however, with Hulu staying tight-lipped on what to expect from the next season.
Season five has been confirmed, however, with the series expected to drop next summer in 2022.
It isn’t known if this is the last season of the show, with Hulu not commenting on the future of the series.
Even if this is the last season of The Handmaid’s Tale, there is still plenty in store for the franchise, with Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel, The Testaments, already in development at Hulu.
If June and Serena do go to war with their two separate groups of followers, it could set the stage for the sequel series to premiere.
The sequel novel is set 15 years after the events of the original book, the show will likely work on a similar timeframe.
However, since its announcement, Hulu has not given any further details of what to expect from the show.
For now, fans will have to wait and see what happens during season five, with the show promising to be the most intense season so far.
