The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance cancelled by Netflix days after Emmy award

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been cancelled by Netflix just days after the acclaimed series scooped an Emmy award.

The show was in its infancy after its first season landed on the streaming platform just last year.

However, despite the ending wrapping up on a cliff-hanger – seeing Nathalie Emmanuel’s Deet absorb the deadly Darkening energy from the crystal – The Jim Henson Company who produced the puppet series will not be making a second instalment.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news, issuing a statement from Jim Henson’s daughter Lisa who executive produced the show alongside Halle Stanford and director Louis Leterrier.

She said: ‘We can confirm that there will not be an additional season of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

‘We know fans are eager to learn how this chapter of The Dark Crystal saga concludes and we’ll look for ways to tell that story in the future. Our company has a legacy of creating rich and complex worlds that require technical innovation, artistic excellence, and masterful storytelling.

‘Our history also includes productions that are enduring, often finding and growing their audience over time and proving again and again that fantasy and science fiction genres reflect eternal messages and truths that are always relevant.

‘We are so grateful to Netflix for trusting us to realize this ambitious series; we are deeply proud of our work on Age of Resistance, and the acclaim it has received from fans, critics, and our peers, most recently receiving an Emmy for outstanding children’s program.’

Age of Resistance was the prequel to the iconic Dark Crystal film of the 1970s, seeing conceptual designer Brian Froud and his puppet-maker wife Wendy inject life back into the fantasy world of Thra, after working on the original as well as Labyrinth and Star Wars.

While the puppets were the real stars of the show, showrunner Leterrier who directed every single episode, managed to draft in a star-studded voice cast, including the likes of Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Mark Hamill, and Jason Isaacs.

Ahead of its release last year, Brian spoke to Metro.co.uk about the project, where he called the puppetry work ‘beyond pioneering’.

He told us: ‘Reproaching it from the original and doing it again, we were pioneering what we were doing way back then.

‘And we have gone beyond pioneering now. We are pushing the boundaries of puppeting and what it can do and tell a story.’

This was recently recognised by the Academy, seeing the show pick up an Emmy award for outstanding children’s program where Lisa thanked her father Jim for ‘inspiring it all’.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is available to stream now on Netflix.
