Is there no family loyalty on Coronation Street any more? Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) doesn’t think so when his step-mum Carla (Alison King) gives a job to his arch enemy, Jacob Hay (Jack James Ryan).
Poor Carla is somewhat stuck in the middle, as she’s only given Jacob the job at the factory after a lot of pleading from Amy (Elle Mulvaney), who is Peter (Chris Gascoyne)’s niece and hence also a member of Carla’s extended family. Carla admires Amy’s cheek in asking in the first place and offers Jacob a trial.
When the news reaches Simon, Toyah (Georgia Taylor), Nick (Ben Price), Leanne (Jane Danson) and Peter they’re all furious with her. They haven’t forgotten the absolute havoc Jacob wreaked on the family in the past, dragging Simon into the seedy world of drug dealing and putting Leanne through a horrific ordeal.
Simon is particularly angry and makes sure Carla knows exactly how he feels about her latest recruit. He tells her she’s been disloyal to the family. He makes a scene in the factory, publicly shaming Jacob for his violent and criminal past.
Jacob is left feeling humiliated, while Carla wonders whether she made the right decision after all in hiring him.
