We know it’s hard to accept, heck it’s hard for us to write, but dreams of Fleabag Season 3 have been all but squashed. Though it’s been known for months that writer, creator, producer, Phoebe Waller-Bridge hadn’t planned for the show to continue past its second season, fans of the sharp comedy have still been holding out hope for more of the character Fleabag. But, fans will have to come to grips with the fact that a third season just isn’t happening. In fact, initially, Waller-Bridge was against the idea of season 2.

Emmy Wins

It’s hard to believe that Fleabag season 2 could have just as easily never happened. After racking up no less than six Emmy Awards for the second season, including the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, which upset audiences of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Veep alike, fans were sure that Waller-Bridge would consider extending the show for, at least, another season. But, the actress took the wins as confirmation that the story and its arc would be better off left where they are, rather than being extended.

Why Fleabag Season 3 isn’t happening

“To be honest, this just feels like the most beautiful, beautiful way to say goodbye to it, actually. It does feel like the story is complete… It does feel right. Go out on a high. You can’t get higher than this,” Waller-Bridge told reporters following her many wins at the 2019 Emmy’s. And while fans and Amazon executives alike are gunning for Fleabag Season 3, Waller-Bridge has moved on to different projects.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge didn’t want to do season 2

In fact, Waller-Bridge wanted to move on to different projects before season 2 even happened. According to Harry Bradbeer, who served as the director for season 1 and 2 of Fleabag, she “really did not want to do a second season of Fleabag,” Bradbeer confessed to Vogue. Bradbeer went on to share that Waller-Bridge really struggled to write and conceptualize the show’s second season. “She was stumped, stumped, stumped—and depressed about it. She didn’t want to do something that wasn’t good enough,” Bradbeer told Vogue.

But why did Waller-Bridge struggle so much with season 2 of Fleabag? According to the the actress, it’s because she had conceived of the story years before it became a tv show. In fact, Fleabag started as a one-woman show. When it was picked up for the first season, Waller-Bridge never thought it would extend beyond that. By the time she was asked to write a second season, she was in an entirely different space in her life.

Waller-Bridge is working on new projects

“It’s so hard because you change. You’re trying to write authentically all the time. You have to write that change, and coming into the second season, it was like, you have to, you know, inverted commas, ‘give the people what they want,’” Waller-Bridge confessed. Fortunately, for fans of Fleabag, the writer pushed through her own doubts and insecurities because the genius of the second season far surpassed the first. Though fans of Fleabag might be sad that season 3 isn’t happening, we respect Waller-Bridge enough to know when her story is complete. As she is currently in the midst of writing a feature film, we’re sure to hear plenty more of her unique voice in Hollywood.
