Saturday Night Live returns to NBC on Saturday, October 3, just in time for the presidential election on November 3 on SNL. Why is Jim Carrey replacing Woody Harrelson as Joe Biden?

Award-winning actor Jim Carrey will be returning to the SNL stage. He has hosted the series on several occasions in the past but this time, he will be returning as part of the show’s cast.

He will be portraying democratic presidential hopeful, Joe Biden in the US sketch series.

Carrey will be taking over from Woody Harrelson, who played the political icon and former vice president in season 45.

Speaking to NME, Harrelson explained why he would no longer be playing Biden on SNL.

He revealed the decision to step down was due to his availability.

Harrelson said: “I was approached two or three times but I couldn’t do it so I don’t know, maybe Lorne [Michaels] has moved on which would probably be smart to have people who were definitely going to show up.

“Because I don’t know, I wasn’t always going to be there, but I’d be open to doing it again of course. It’s so fun.”

SNL producer Lorne Michaels revealed Carrey received the part after pitching his take on the politician too Michaels directly.

Speaking to Vulture, Michaels said: “There was some interest on his part.

“And then we responded, obviously, positively.

“But it came down to discussions about what the take was.

“He and Colin Jost had a bunch of talks. He and I as well. He will give the part energy and strength, and…hopefully, it’s funny.”

Carrey appeared to confirm the news on Twitter last night (Saturday, September 19) when he posted a cartoon image mocking President Donald Trump.

The image portrayed a naked trump with the words “by New Years Day 2021 more Americans will die from Trump’s negligence than the number of people killed at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

“There’s nothing more deadly than an insecure man.”

He captioned the picture “#BidenHarris”.

The role of Biden has previously been played by huge Hollywood stars including Jason Sudeikis and John Mulaney.

The upcoming series of SNL will see Bridesmaids star Maya Rudolph reprise her role was Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris.

Rudolph recently won an Emmy for her portrayal of Harris.

SNL fans have taken to Twitter to share their excitement ahead of Carrey’s performance.

One fan tweeted: “Jim Carrey as Joe Biden? Yes, please!”

A second fan added: “Jim Carrey can play Joe Biden better than Joe Biden and I cannot wait!”

However, some fans of the series are frustrated SNL is not using one of the show’s cast members to play the role of Biden.

One fan tweeted: “Here’s a throwback idea: How about have cast members play the presidential candidates?”
