Rob Burrow says technology means he ‘still has a voice’
Rob Burrow and his wife Lindsey Burrow have shared an update on his Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in an emotional interview.
Speaking on the latest episode of Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, Lindsey said: “Rob was diagnosed back in December 2019 and before his diagnosis, he was having problems with his speech, he was having difficulty articulating certain words and generally slower in his speech.
“Having played rugby and having a few head injuries, it was quickly investigated.”
So they went to see a neurologist and had a variety of tests, including MRI scans and blood tests.
She continued: “Three weeks later we were given the devastating diagnosis that it was MND.

“Rob was really fortunate because it was his speech, they very quickly did something called voice banking.
“It’s where they recorded Rob speaking, it was him reading Peter Rabbit at the time.”
She added: “They banked his voice and used that, which the technology to kind of implement that, so I think it is really special that we can still hear Rob’s voice.”

Without the machine which Rob uses daily, he has no other means of communication with his loved ones.
“If he wants a drink or needs to tell the kids something, he’s got that means of communication,” his wife shared.
“So without that, he wouldn’t have any means of communicating.”
When asked what difference the technology has made to his life, Rob said: “The technology has made a huge difference, it means I still have a voice.

“I can communicate with my friends and family, I can control the television, use social media and even do a podcast.”
Rob, 41, was diagnosed just two years after retiring from his 17-year rugby league career.
