Outrage as world's top female footballer is asked to twerk while collecting major award
4th December 2018

There has been an intense online backlash after the world’s leading female footballer was asked to twerk onstage.

Ada Hegerberg is a Norwegian athlete and the first recipient of the inaugural female Ballon D’or prize.

While collecting the award onstage on Monday evening (December 3), the Lyon striker was asked to twerk by show host Martin Solveig — a request she immediately refused.

You can check out the awkward exchange below:

Naturally, the comments have sparked outrage online, with Twitter users lambasting Solveig, and a description of “breathtakingly sexist” being added to his Wikipedia bio.

Here are just a few of their reactions:

After refusing to twerk, Ada then agreed to another song with Solveig and retired French footballer, David Ginola.

And, speaking after the ceremony, it seems she has no hard feelings towards Solveig.

She said: “He came to me afterwards and was really sad that it went that way. I didn’t really consider it sexual harassment or anything in the moment. I was just happy to do the dance and win the Ballon d’Or.”

Solveig has also since apologised.

“I didn’t mean to offend anyone and I didn’t know if this was seen as such an offence,” he said.

“This was a joke, probably a bad one and I want to apologise to everyone I may have offended. Sorry about that.”
