Netflix's Money Heist to end after fifth season
31st July 2020

Netflix has confirmed that Money Heist will end after its fifth season.

The Spanish crime series is the most popular non-English show on the streaming service, and experienced increased viewership this year while many sought entertainment from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

It has now been announced that the show’s upcoming season will also be its last, in a post shared across Netlifx’s official social media accounts.

‘THE HEIST COMES TO AN END. PART 5,’ they wrote.

The show’s creator, Alex Pina, has also teased what fans can expect from the last instalment – and he promises things will go out with a bang.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he stated: ‘We’ve spent almost a year thinking about how to break up the band. How to put the Professor on the ropes. How to get into situations that are irreversible for many characters.

‘The result is the fifth part of La Casa de Papel (Money Heist). The war reaches its most extreme and savage levels, but it is also the most epic and exciting season.’

He continued: ‘We are moving from a chess game – a mere intellectual strategy – to a war strategy: attack and contention.

‘We always try that our opponents be charismatic, intelligent, shiny. In this case, in pure war film genre, we also look for characters whose intelligence can measure up against The Professor’s.

‘Adrenaline is within Money Heist’s DNA. Every thirty seconds things take place and disrupt the characters, a turn of the screw to the action.

‘However, the gang will now be pushed into irreversible situations, into a wild war: it is the most epic part of all the parts we’ve shot.’

The show’s most recent fourth season was watched by 65 million accounts within the first four weeks of its release in April.

While the release date of the fifth and final season has yet to be announced, it is known to consist of 10 episodes, with production starting next Monday.

Seasons 1-4 of Money Heist are available to stream on Netflix.
