Pedro Alonso is set to reprise his role as Berlin yet again in the upcoming second half of the Spanish thriller’s fifth and final season. However, the half-brother and close associate of the Professor (played by Álvaro Morte) already died back in Money Heist’s second season, but will soon be returning to Netflix in a newly announced spin-off series.

The upcoming offshoot will presumably turn the clocks back again to Berlin’s life as a career criminal before joining up with the Professor’s mission.

However, his origins have already been explored in multiple flashback segments throughout Money Heist’s later instalments.

Spanish star Pedro confirmed he’ll be reprising his iconic role, and the series will premiere on Netflix in 2023.

He said at a recent fan event: “I’m so happy about it.”

“I am deeply grateful to be able to connect with people all over the world and receive so much love and such a memorable time.

“We started this series walking into the unknown and we have been winning ever since. You fans are our accomplices and thank you for that.”

Unfortunately, the news has been met with considerable criticism from certain viewers, who may have preferred another Money Heist character to take the spotlight.

Twitter user @Sugar45534644 said: “If Berlin has a spin-off WHY DID WE NEED ALL THOSE FLASHBACKS IN THE F*****G SHOW ?!!”

@anyajnkins added: “We wanted a spin-off about Alicia Sierra. Delete this.”

And @badlikangel fumed: “WHAT THE HELL I WANT [A] NAIROBI SPINN OFF TOO.”

Characters like the disgraced police inspector Alicia (Najwa Nimri) or the similarly killed off Nairobi (Alba Flores) could have made much more interesting subjects than the heavily-explored Berlin.

Plus, the existence of this spin-off may rule out any of the current cast from returning after the international hit’s final hurrah comes to screens this Friday.

Fans may have to say their final farewells to the likes of Denver (Jaime Lorente) and Lisbon (Itziar Ituño) by the time the credits roll on the remaining five episodes.

Thankfully, the Money Heist legacy will now continue but clearly, Berlin wasn’t the right choice to entice certain viewers back to the Spanish phenomenon.

Many Netflix subscribers also expressed frustration with the streamer as they felt a number of other shows deserved to continue instead.

“@StarkillerGR replied to the announcement: “You cancelled Sense8, The OA and Altered Carbon, three of your most intelligent and heartful shows.

“And you continue to milk one that should have ended years ago. Way to go Netflix.”

And @BqreXD added: “Why…It was such a great show… Just let it end, no need to continue it just because it’s successful. The more seasons/movies the worse the franchise gets.”

Still, there were plenty of other fans excited for the show to continue, especially with the charismatic Berlin at the helm.

@lomlagata tweeted: “Idk how yall are p****d about the Berlin spinoff.

“Berlin is the only character that is loved almost equally by all and also has a dynamic & interesting storyline. PERSONALLY I’M SO EXCITED AND HAPPY ABOUT IT!”

Unfortunately, the series won’t be surfacing for another couple of years, so fans still have some time to wait to see if Berlin’s solo show lives up to the original.

Money Heist season 5, part 2 will be released on Friday, December 3 on Netflix.
