Luther’s location guide – where BBC drama is filmed and set

Luther has returned for season five on the BBC.

The drama brings a gritty realism to the Beeb, and it looks like this season will give us more of the same.

Luther takes to the underbelly of the criminal world as he tries to solve the worse crimes.

Idris Elba, who stars as John Luther, described the four-parter as "classic".

We already know Alice (Ruth Wilson) is back, the psychotic woman became close with the DCI in season three.

We were told she was murdered off screen in season four, but she returns for season five.

The show is based in London, which means fans have been keeping a beady eye out for familiar spots.


Elba was seen in Islington in March as they filmed a few scenes. The team were seen in front of the grand Georgian houses of Union Square, just off St Paul’s Street.


Elba was born here and was brought up in the borough.

Dalston residents saw the team filming in Wilton Way.

Bethnal Green

Again the crew were seen filming again. Roman Road market appears in the show.

Liverpool Street

The overground and underground train stations have been used regularly for filming.

Mission Impossible, Stormbreaker and The Shadow Line have all filmed there.

Crofton Park

The crew were seen filming The Rivoli Ballroom. It’s the only 1950s ballroom remaining in England.
Many TV shows and films have used it as a setting before. Promo shots of Cornelius (played by Patrick Malahide) were taken here.

The show has also filmed The show is filmed in various locations around Central, North, West and East London including the Barbican Estate, Elephant and Castle, Westfield Shopping Centre (Shepherd’s Bush), Renaissance Hotel (Heathrow Airport), Cranbrook Estate (Bethnal Green), Waterloo station, Holloway, Shoreditch and the Docklands.
