Louise Minchin bursts into tears forcing BBC Breakfast into a break
23rd December 2020

BBC Breakfast’s Louise Minchin burst into tears over a heartwarming care home story just 30 minutes into today’s programme, prompting the show to cut to a break.

The presenter was overcome with emotion after watching a surprise video for the staff at Court House in Somerset, who spent 84 days away from their families to keep residents safe during the pandemic.

The clip showed that the families and friends of the staff members and residents had formed a choir, and they shared their thanks by singing a rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.

After the segment aired, Louise was seen wiping away her tears.

‘Do you know what? It’s been a year, hasn’t it?’ she said, before letting out an almighty sigh.

Her co-host Jon Kay quickly handed her a box of tissues and she began to cry.

‘I can’t really speak,’ Louise said. ‘What’s really touching about that is they’re singing along. They’ve done an amazing thing.

‘They’ve done it on behalf of so many of us and I’ve gone very early. I know it’s 6.30am. I’m sorry if you’re crying as well but that’s just how this year’s been.’

‘I don’t blame you,’ Jon confessed. ‘That was really powerful, wasn’t it? What an amazing thing for them to do.’

‘I’ll be alright,’ Louise said as she wiped her eyes with a tissue. ‘We’ll all be alright.’

Jon then called for a break and the show handed over to the regional reporters who shared the latest news, travel and weather in local areas.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
