Kevin Vidal confesses he ‘never read the full script of Culprits’ as heist series comes to Disney+

Culprits kicks off where most stories end, after a high-stakes heist. The Disney+ show follows a crew of elite criminals who go their separate ways after their mission – that is until the gang find themselves being killed off one by one.

The eight-part series picks up with one member of the crew, Joe (played by Misfits star Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) who has since relocated to the States.

Three years after the heist he’s living with his two kids and fiancé Jules, who has no idea about Joe’s previous life or UK identity.

Canadian actor Kevin Vidal plays Jules and says it’s life imitating art between him and his character.

“I don’t ever really read full scripts,” admits Kevin, 34. “But it worked out because my character doesn’t know anything that’s going on either.

“Jules thinks he’s living with a regular guy and he knows there’s baggage – but nothing prepares Jules for the full extent of everything Joe is going through.”

The missing half of the story is told through flashbacks starting in the UK, where Joe is recruited by notorious criminal Dianne Harwood (Gemma Arterton) to take part in the risky robbery.

After that, it’s clear that Joe is keeping up appearances in his new life with a fake accent – and during filming, Nathan also threw members of the crew when he slipped into his native English tones.

“I had seen Nathan in shows before, so I knew he wasn’t American, but he sustained the accent all through shooting,” says Kevin. “It was funny when he’d go into his natural voice, crew members would be like, ‘Wait, what?’ – they were very confused.”

As with any action series, there are stunts involved, from shootings to car chases.

“I’d only just got my driver’s licence at that time, so I didn’t do any big stunts,” confesses Kevin. “But I saw some, and then I did some green screen driving.

“There was a time where I would have loved to do the stunts, but now I’m 34 – if I did any stunts, I would ruin my body.”

With the series being filmed all over Europe as well as Canada, Kevin’s looking forward to watching the filming he missed, including scenes with the other stars of the show Gemma, Eddie Izzard and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

“I’m going to watch it with my husband,” says Kevin. “I shot my stuff two years ago, so this has been a long time coming – I almost forgot about it!”
