The 49-year-old actress opened up about the difficult relationship she had with her model mother Nancy Dow, admitting that her focus on looks left her feeling insecure.
Speaking on Lorraine alongside her Dumplin co-star Dolly Parton, Jennifer explained: "My mum was consumed and concerned with her physical appearance.
"Her parents were basically non-existent and she was one of five sisters – she had this beauty so that's how she was able to go out and make a living, with modelling.
"It wasn't her fault, it's just the things she would teach me… I didn't have what she had necessarily, and it didn't instil a lot of security about how I felt about my physical appearance."
The actress went on to add that she was actively encouraged to wear make-up as a schoolchild, explaining: "She was always there telling me what to do and how to do it.
"Y'know: 'Put your eyes on, don't go to the market without.'
"I was like: 'I'm 13, do I have to put my eyes on? Aren't they there?'"
But the star insisted that she doesn't have any ill feeling towards her mother, concluding with: "It's not a criticism about her, it's just all she knew."
The comments came soon after Jennifer opened up about her difficult relationship with her mum – who she previously suffered a highly-publicised fall-out with.
Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, the former Friends star explained how she resonated with the plot of her new film Dumplin, where she plays a pushy mother and former pageant queen whose plus-size daughter enters herself into a beauty competition.
She said at the time: "I did not come out the model child she'd hoped for and it was something that really resonated with me, this little girl just wanting to be seen and wanting to be loved by a mum who was too occupied with things that didn't quite matter."
In 2015, Jennifer admitted that her mother's attitude towards physical appearance meant that she still doesn't think of herself as attractive.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: "She was very critical of me.
"Because she was a model, she was gorgeous, stunning. I wasn't. I never was. I honestly still don't think of myself in that sort of light, which is fine."
Jen and Dow were estranged for nine years, which was partially triggered by Dow writing a book about their relationship following her daughter's rise to fame.
The pair reconciled in 2005, with Dow passing away in May 2016.
