Jason Derulo becomes the world’s biggest unsigned artist after Warner split
12th July 2020

JASON Derulo is hoping to make a mint by going it alone after ditching his record label.

The superstar has become the world’s biggest unsigned artist after deciding not to commit to a new deal, having split from Warner Records earlier this year after more than a decade.

Despite the star being capable of commanding an eight-figure agreement, I have learned that Jason is now a free agent and is ploughing his own money into new music — and hoping to reap big rewards.

His decision is already proving fruitful, as he and New Zealand-born producer Jawsh 685 are at No1 in the singles chart this week with their tune Savage Love.

And the Ridin’ Solo star plans to release lots more music in the coming months after having his releases stalled under his previous deal. A music insider said: “It would have to take something really big for Jason to sign to another label now.”

They added: “Going independent was a conscious and active decision by Jason because he wants to do things his way.

“His decision means that he could make a fortune, as he will no longer have to hand over a hefty percentage of his earnings.

“Jason has an 11-year, chart-topping career under his belt so he feels like he is in the right place now to make important decisions without a label.”

Viral on TikTok

The industry insider explained: “He really trusts the tight-knit team who have been with him since day one, and he feels like he’s in the best position to steer his career to new heights.”

The pop and R&B star — who has scored five No1s in the UK and sold an eye-watering 190million records worldwide — has reignited his career in recent months thanks to his viral videos on trendy app TikTok, where he has amassed 28million followers.

The move is all part of a fresh push for the American after splitting from Warner, having not released a full album since Everything Is 4 back in 2015. Earlier this year, Jason said: “I was on a record label for my entire career and I was trying to get off that label for quite some time.

“I was finally able to get released and now I’m at a home where I’m comfortable and where I think my music can flourish.

“We’re all on the same page creatively.

The star added: “I feel excited to release the music I have. I have so much great material that’s just waiting.”

It looks as though the sky’s the limit for him now . . .

Mum Vogue is all Heart

VOGUE Williams looked the picture of summer style yesterday as she headed to work at Heart FM.

The model – married to former Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews – wore a powder blue midi dress and jewelled sandals and carried a wicker handbag.

Vogue is expecting her second child with Spencer later this month. The couple, who have a son called Theo, are having a baby girl – with Vogue revealing she did a gender test because she could not bear waiting. She said: “We did a test at ten weeks because we were so impatient. It’s a girl, which is even more exciting, because we did think it was a boy for about a week.”

Vogue is planning on heading straight back to work once the tot arrives.

Speaking about her maternity plans, she told Fabulous last week: “I love working at Heart and I just want to carry on. I leave my house at 4.50am and I’m back by 9.20am.”

Lizzo: I feel like I'm dying

LIZZO has opened up about her battle with anxiety, saying she feels like she’s “dying” when she is at her lowest ebb.

In a revealing new interview, the Truth Hurts singer said she had turned to therapy in a bid to cope.

Lizzo said: “Sometimes I have negative thoughts and feel like I’m dying. I’ve learned to breathe when this happens. I understand the privilege of being able to practise circulate breathing until I can manage my anxiety.

“I cry and talk to a therapist until that oppressive feeling goes away.”

The singer said the stress she felt because of negative comments was the reason she quit Twitter earlier this year. She added: “I usually don’t care when people make negative comments but that was too much. I was seeing so much negative stuff and it was depressing.”

Lizzo also spoke about breaking the stereotype of what she claims society thinks pop stars should look like. She told Marie Claire Australia: “I’m a big girl and I’m aware of that. I do the same s**t Bella Hadid does [on social media] but you’re not used to seeing this body doing that.

“I sing the same way as Rihanna but I’m bigger than her and that shocks people.

“But I’m not doing anything out of the ordinary, I’m just being myself.”

EMILY Atack was almost caught turning the air blue live on Sunday Brunch. The I’m A Celeb star managed to stop herself dropping the F-bomb when trying a dish made by hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer. She said: “I keep nearly swearing.”

Gemma’s £1m deal is Tok of the town

EVERYTHING she touches seems to turn to gold, and now bosses at video app TikTok are preparing to line Gemma Collins’ pockets for the next year.

The reality star is being pursued by the brand, which is offering her £1million to sign up to the platform to create weekly content for them.

The approach was made after Gemma’s name was mentioned on TikTok more than 10million times during lockdown. An insider said: “Gemma is a hit on social media and makes hundreds of thousands from her Instagram account.

“And this brand power has been noticed by the bosses at TikTok, who realised how massive she was on the platform when the figures from her hashtag came through. They are lining up a meeting with Gemma and her team next month to talk about a potential collaboration.

“TikTok have said money is no issue and that Gemma basically has a blank cheque she can fill in. Obviously her team know Gemma’s worth and are looking at a deal worth around £1million.

“They are so keen to get her on board they’ve come up with a loose plan that would see her creating content to be posted once or twice a week.

“And she could still keep all her other endorsements and ad deals on the go. It’s a win-win for both of them, and if TikTok can get Gemma on board it’s going to be a huge coup.”

Gemma’s going to be laughing all the way to the bank before the year is out.

Clues Perrie well hidden

LITTLE Mix fans think they’ve spotted another clue about the band’s upcoming sixth album in this snap of Perrie Edwards.

The singer posed in a bohemian-style crop top and skirt for the shot, which was posted on the band’s official Instagram account. But for once Perrie’s fans were more interested in the caption than the picture itself.

It reads: Touch Me Like A Summer Night”, with some speculating the line could be a lyric from one of the new songs, after Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock dropped similar hints.

TOBIN Bell, who played terrifying Jigsaw in the Saw franchise, says he is not a big fan of horror films. When asked if the role had made him fond of the genre, he told Forbes: “Not compared to real fans, no. Those who are deeply passionate.”

A Latin love-in

SHE brought him on stage with Shakira at the Super Bowl in February and now Jennifer Lopez has hinted she’s teaming up with Latin superstar Maluma on a new song.

J-Lo, who is of Puerto-Rican heritage, posted a series of new pictures with the Colombian singer on her Instagram, including one with her holding sheet music.

She captioned it: “Are you ready?” while Maluma told fans: “We are recording a bomb.”

His Blud's up

HE has made no secret of his love for quirky outfits, and Yungblud’s latest song carries on that theme.

On Thursday he will release Strawberry Lipstick, which signals a new era for the 11 Minutes singer after he teased the song by releasing a video showing him burning the straitjacket he wore for hit first album 21st Century Liability.

In his latest tune, which I’ve been lucky enough to have an exclusive first listen to, he sings about his “toxic attitude and lack of self-control”.

Artwork for the song sees Yungblud don a Union Flag vest – similar to the dress design Geri Horner wore with the Spice Girls – accompanied by an Old English Bulldog.

Yungblud, who is single following his split with singer Halsey last year, goes on to sing: “She got my heart in her hand like a headlock. I don’t know what she’s doing but she’ll do me wrong.”

The song follows the rescheduling of his tour to kick off in March next year.

CHARLIZE Theron has revealed the follow-up to Atomic Blonde could go straight to Netflix. Speaking to Total Film, the actress said talks had already been held about the streaming giant buying the sequel. She said: “We talked to them about it extensively, and we’re in the process of writing it right now.”

VIRAL smash Savage Love, by Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685, is on course to spend a third week at the No1 spot, according to the Official Charts First Look. Late rapper Juice Wrld is also on course to land a Top Ten placing with Life’s A Mess, featuring Halsey.

BIRD Box 2 is currently in development, with novelist Josh Malerman, whose work inspired the original 2018 thriller with Sandra Bullock, working on the next instalment. He said: “I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”

CHRIS Ramsay’s wife Rosie has opened up about falling pregnant for a second time after suffering a miscarriage two years ago. She said on Instagram Live: “Just really excited and I’m an emotional wreck 24/7 at the minute. Thank you so much and I really look forward to sharing the ups and downs. So yeah, I’m really excited.”
