John, 51, and Suranne, 39, became close pals when they worked together on A Few Good Men in the Theatre Royal, London, in 2005.
In his book Anything Goes, the I'm A Celebrity star said: "I found a surrogate mother for my future children. From the play A Few Good Men I gained a good friend in actress Suranne Jones, or Sarah as she’s known to her mates.”
He said the ex Coronation Street actress would spend hours “talking about everything and anything over a drink or two or three” with him.
He added: “One night she told me that if Scott and I ever did decide we wanted to have a child of our own, she’d be happy to accommodate us.
"Perhaps one day I might become a dad, we have a lot of love to give and I adore kids.”
John is taking part in I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! 2018 and before going in, he admitted his partner Scott is not ready to have kids.
He said: "It has to be a partnership thing and I don’t think Scott is ready."
Meanwhile, he told The Sun that he wants to be the show's first gender fluid winner, explaining: "I would be the king or queen of the jungle!”
The star made his name in the West End, landing roles in musicals including Miss Saigon, The Phantom of The Opera, Sunset Boulevard and La Cage aux Folles.
I'm A Celeb is not The Doctor Who star's first rodeo, as he's taken part in Dancing On Ice, Children in Need and the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special – as well as putting in a memorable appearance on Celebrity Juice, and hosting quiz show Pressure Pad.
John met his husband, Scott Gill, during a production at the Chichester Film Festival in 1993 where Scott was in the audience.
The couple entered a civil partnership in 2006 and legally married in California in 2013.
