‘I dreamt of being a wife but men saw me as a fetish – now I’m MAFS first transgender bride’
11th September 2023

Married At First Sight UK star Ella has opened up about being the show's first transgender bride, revealing that she never thought she'd achieve her marriage dream.

The 29-year-old clinic consultant is a blonde bombshell with a big heart, but admitted to OK! that she hasn't had the easiest time with dating in the past.

"Growing up, my dream was to be a princess, a wife, a mother. Back then, I didn’t think that was possible – that I could transition and be who I am," she said.

"Being trans, I found men didn’t want to be with me openly – a lot of guys see us as a fetish, so I never believed I would ever get married."

She added: "After transitioning and having all my surgeries, I just thought, 'I do want to get married,' and that I owed it to six-year-old me to fulfil my dream."

The bride from Weston-Super-Mare signed up to appear on MAFS UK and loved the experience – but revealed that she underestimated how teary she would be during the process.

"I was very open minded going into the experience, and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. I knew I had thick skin, but I didn’t realise how emotional this would be," she said. "I remember saying I would never cry in front of a man and for a lot of the show I cried. Me and Ros were known as the criers."

As for what she was looking for in a husband, Ella revealed that she wanted someone tall and open-minded with good teeth. " You could look like the back end of a bus but as long as you’ve got good teeth, I’d probably date you," she said.

Ella isn't the only single taking part in the E4 show this year – she's joined in the hen party by 31-year-old Jay from Lancashire, 34-year-old Laura from Hampshire, 32-year-old Peggy from Kent, 36-year-old Porscha from London and 28-year-old Rosaline from Crewe.

Also walking down the aisle is 31-year-old Peggy from Nottingham and 25-year-old Tasha from Leeds.

While we don't know who their husbands are just yet, they'll be matched with either 34-year-old tennis coach Arthur, 27-year-old model Brad, 30-year-old sports rehabilitator Georges, 30-year-old sales executive Luke, 36-year-old marketing manager Nathanial, 26-year-old account manager Paul, 40-year-old DJ Terence and 27-year-old Thomas.

And of course, it'll be up to the MAFS experts – Paul C. Brunson, Melanie Schilling and Charlene Douglas – as to who'll be matched up together.

Married at First Sight UK airs from Monday 18th September at 9pm on E4.
