Leyla Harding (played by Roxy Shahidi) and Liam Cavanagh (Johnny McPherson) have had a bumpy start to married life on Emmerdale and their relationship woes could soon spiral out of control. ITV soap fans will know Leyla recently discovered she was pregnant with her husband’s baby. However, she chose not to tell Liam as she feared it would be too much for him to handle after he tragically lost his 18-year-old daughter Leanna Cavanagh (Mimi Slinger) just a few months ago. On Monday night’s episode, viewers saw Leyla take a trip to see the nurse after suspecting she’d suffered a miscarriage. She later confessed the truth to Liam, but he didn’t quite react how she’d expected. Could the increased tensions between the pair become all too much and cause the end of their marriage?

In recent scenes on the ITV soap, Liam has been struggling with his grief as he comes to terms with the death of his daughter.

Leanna died on her 18th birthday, but unbeknown to Liam, the teenager was murdered by villainous nurse Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) who pushed her off the top of a bridge.

After having her suspicions, Liam’s new wife Leyla recently took a pregnancy test and got a positive result.

As her pregnancy news came so soon after Leanna’s death, Leyla decided not to tell Liam over fears it would upset him.

However, on Monday night’s episode of Emmerdale, the truth about her pregnancy finally came out.

In the episode, Leyla visited nurse Wendy Posner (Susan Cookson) for a check-up following some concerns about her pregnancy.

Determined to protect Liam, Leyla persuaded Wendy to bypass her doctor husband and arrange a scan for her directly so he wouldn’t find out.

However, Liam later bumped into Priya Kotecha (Fiona Wade) who began acting suspiciously after Leyla’s name was mentioned.

His encounter with Priya caused Liam to suspect something could be wrong with Leyla, so he later confronted his wife in an attempt to find out the truth.

When Liam grilled Leyla, she eventually confessed that she believed she’s suffered a miscarriage.

“I went to see Wendy earlier on as well and she’s booked me in for a scan at the hospital tomorrow,” Leyla explained.

“So, this pregnancy test…” Liam began before Leyla interrupted: “Seven. I did seven.”

Puzzled as to why his wife had hidden this secret from him, Liam asked: “So, you didn’t want me to know?”

“No, I wanted to tell you more than anything but I just couldn’t find the right time,” Leyla insisted.

“Anytime would have done!” Liam exclaimed, with Leyla replying: “Really Liam?

“Because you looked me in the eye and told me you couldn’t contemplate having more kids.”

“So I was terrified wasn’t I? I thought this could end our marriage,” she explained.

Leyla seemed stunned at Liam’s lack of empathy over the fact she may have miscarried.

“Liam, our baby might have just died,” she said.

“Yes, I understand that. Of course, you’re upset,” Liam said, with Leyla replying: “And you’re not.”

Liam explained: “I don’t know how I feel. I think maybe I’ve just lost so much already that this…”

“Seems irrelevant,” Leyla said, finishing her husband’s sentence.

“No of course not. A lot of pregnancies end in miscarriage. It’s common and clinically it’s very early. It’s the first trimester,” Liam explained.

“Yeah, I know!” Leyla exclaimed, showing her frustration.

“I’m sorry if that sounds harsh,” Liam added, as Leyla wiped away her tears and said: “No, it’s fine. You know, you’re Mr Practical.”

Liam then told Leyla he might not be able to go to the scan with her as he’s busy with work.

Leyla burst into tears once again as her husband left out the front door.

Leyla is clearly devastated by the lack of emotional support offered up by her husband.

Could this heartbreaking experience end up driving a wedge between the newly married couple?

If Liam continues to lack empathy during this difficult time, he may end up pushing Leyla away.

Will this be the end of Leyla and Liam’s marriage? Viewers will have to tune in to find out their fate.

Emmerdale continues Tuesday at 7 pm on ITV.
