Emmerdale’s Mary Goskirk was brutally attacked on Tuesday’s episode of the ITV soap, when her sham romance with grifter Faye was finally unearthed by the lovelorn pensioner.
In recent weeks, fans have seen newly out and proud lesbian Mary embark on her first real romance since admitting her sexuality after the death of her husband.
Hitting it off with the mysterious Faye, Mary had even planned to leave the dales and jet off to Ecuador in order to be with her, with Faye having convinced Mary to stage a charity fundraiser for a women's shelter that didn't even exist.
Yet in devastating scenes on Tuesday, the romance was finally discovered to be a lie, when Mary was confronted by the reality that her new girlfriend had swindled her out of thousands of pounds.
Initially, Mary had been reluctant to believe that Faye was anything other than the perfect date, with Suzie and daughter Rhona both having tried to convince Mary of their suspicions.
However it wasn’t until Mary comforted her directly, that Faye admitted the truth – with cruel con artist even gaslighting Mary into thinking she was simple and boring and deserved to have been swindled out of the money.
As things came to a head, a tussle took place, with Faye shoving Mary to the ground with such force that she smacked her head on the ground, and was left unconscious.
Fans at home were devastated by the situation, with many gutted that Mary had been denied a happy ending despite having had high hopes for finding love for the first time in her life.
“Bloody hell that was a big clang there when the penny dropped with an almighty thud for Mary,” wrote one fan on twitter.
Before a second soon added: “Not happy about this, I liked Mary, she deserved to be happy…”
A third fan then echoed the sentiment as they wrote: “Poor Mary no one in soaps can ever be happy.”
Another viewer then weighed in by writing: “Emmerdale has messed up doing this to Mary.. still they think older women can’t have a normal straight forward relationship.”
With another fan adding: “Really don’t like this storyline on Emmerdale. To be conned by someone that your in love with, must be awful.”
Thankfully at the end of the episode, Mary regained consciousness and was given the all clear, but was left feeling more than a little embarrassed at having been betrayed by a woman she had dared to trust.
Will Mary ever be able to find true love?
