Sam Mitchell will make her highly-anticipated return to EastEnders next week when she sets foot back in the Square, as Kim Medcalf reprises the iconic role.
Kim, as fans will recall, previously portrayed Sam for four years, between 2002 and 2005, before Danniella Westbrook stepped in once more.
Word of the 48-year-old’s comeback was revealed earlier this year, and it’s safe to say that fans were over the moon at the prospect of having her iteration of Sam back in Walford.
But just how did it all come about?
‘I had a call from EastEnders late last year asking me if I would be interested in coming back and returning as Sam Mitchell,’ actress Kim told Metro.co.uk.
‘I was so thrilled and it didn’t take me long to say yes. I was at my home when I got the call and it really was a really lovely surprise.
‘I’ve been watching the show on and off when I can, so I was really genuinely thrilled to be asked back.’
Kim, who was last seen on Albert Square over 17 years ago, said that she hasn’t ‘ruled out’ a return to the show, as she was always fond of the character.
‘My life took me in a different direction though,’ she explained. ‘I worked a lot in theatre and had a family, so I didn’t necessarily think a return would be on the cards.’
‘It was incredible [being back on Albert Square], just so amazing. It was a really surreal experience, kind of like I’d gone back in time 17 years. I know the lot is new but everything feels so familiar.’
Kim, 48, told us that taking on the mantle of Sam again was a ‘bit strange’ at first, given that the character has ‘evolved’ since she last played her, but she insisted that as soon as she put on her clothes and started to interact with the likes of Phil, Sharon and Kat, the whole thing felt ‘familiar’ to her.
Sam makes her comeback next week, and viewers will realise soon enough that she’s on a mission. The mission, however, remains shrouded in mystery, and Kim was keeping tight-lipped about it all!
‘I don’t want to give too much away as there’s lots to look forward to but she is back on the Square for a reason,’ promised the soap star. ‘Let’s just say she’s got work to do, being Sam Mitchell there’s obviously going to be a lot of trouble. Trouble follows her in her wake.
‘She’s going to cause lots of drama in typical Sam Mitchell style and she’s also going to upset a few people. Let’s just say her return isn’t going to go down well with most people…I really can’t wait for the viewers to see it all.’
As for what’s ahead for Sam in the long-term future?
‘Let’s just say I don’t think the word plain sailing and Sam go in the same sentence at all!,’ added Kim.
‘Wherever Sam Mitchell is, there is trouble not far behind and I think that summarises it well.
‘She wants to be respected, but she doesn’t quite achieve it. She is desperate for people to look at her in the way they look at Phil and Peggy and so that’s what she’s gunning for.
‘There will be a lot of feistiness, and we will see how Sam deals with these issues.’
