EastEnders viewers should brace for a devastating new storyline as a huge fire looks set to engulf Albert Square, leaving homes and lives in danger of being wiped out.

The storyline is yet to be announced by the BBC soap's bosses, but a resident who lives near the set has told Metro that they spotted the scenes being filmed.

"I heard a lot of sirens and thought something was going on but then realised it was coming from the [nearby] EastEnders set," they said. "There were ambulances and fire engines and a lot of smoke. It was definitely not an emergency, they were filming something."

Another source added: "The explosion is really the start of a massive autumn for the show that will take them through the rest of the year."

EastEnders bosses have plenty of drama lined up for the coming months and it was recently announced that soap villain favourite Janine Butcher, played by Charlie Brooks, is on her way back to the Square.

Janine still has a lot of enemies in E20, so expect an explosive return as her reappearance shocks the residents of Albert Square.

There's also a cameo from former football boss Harry Redknapp to look forward to, as the EastEnders fan makes his dream debut on the Square.

Danny Dyer, who plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter, is a real-life West Ham fan and will get to meet his club's ex-manager when he makes a surprise visit to the boozer.

Harry is set to arrive in Walford as the cast are watching the Euros, so it won't be too long until the I'm A Celebrity winner stars in his big scene.

After recording his cameo, Harry also admitted he'd written an entire storyline for how he could become a regular character in the soap – but as bosses haven't taken him up on his suggestion, he'll just be making a one-off appearance.

Meanwhile, a gritty storyline is underway as the Panesars turn on each other over Jags' death in prison.

Suki had allowed her son to go to prison for a crime he didn't commit, but had been paying Ben Mitchell to have him protected – although unknown to her, Ben withdrew the protection when he spotted Jags' brother Kheerat getting cosy with Sharon Watts.

Ben is in a panic over what the Panesars will do to him if they ever find out that he was responsible for the brutal killing by stopping the protection and is desperate to keep the secret under wraps.
