Eamonn Holmes claims trolls plotted to have him and Ruth axed from This Morning

Eamonn Holmes claims social media trolls plotted to have him sacked from his This Morning role just days after it was reported he had been axed.

The veteran journalist, alongside journalist wife, Ruth Langsford, were said to be "furious" and "upset" after their regular Friday appearance on This Morning was brought to an end.

It was revealed by Mirror Online that the husband and wife duo will now be replaced by former X Factor host Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond.

Eamonn, 60, has been fronting the Friday episode of This Morning with Ruth since 2006, as well as stepping in as daily presenters during the UK school holidays.

Speaking on a Facebook Live event, Eamonn revealed that it was "stressful" knowing that online haters hoped to have him fired.

"People say it's water off a duck's back but people wake up and they know they can get you sacked…

"That's the thing about live TV, it can be very stressful," reports The Mirror.

It's said that the Belfast-born reporter had recently feared that he was too "pale, stale and male" for the NTA winning programme.

Due to the mix up on the show, Eamonn and Ruth, 60, will continue to host the show on a daily basis when full-time presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby take their annual leave.

Speaking to the publication, a source said: "ITV has been open about wanting to diversify and make the show less white but they haven't tried to find anything else for them.

"Ruth will remain on Loose Women and they will do school holidays.

"But Eamonn hasn't been offered a role anywhere else on the channel, which is a real shame for him."

Celebrity reporter Alison, 45, has been a fan favourite on the show, winning over bosses when she stepped in as editor and presenter last month alongside Dermot.

"They have a real warmth, it's time for a change and they are perfect," said an insider.

A spokesperson for ITV has said: "We have a stellar presenting line up on This Morning in Holly and Phillip and Eamonn and Ruth.

"Any additions to this line up will be announced in due course."
