Dancing on Ice’s Bez wears helmet to train after his ‘head crashed into the ice’
12th January 2022

Dancing on Ice contestant Bez has revealed he’s been forced to wear a helmet during training for the ITV show following a series of nasty accidents on the rink.

The Happy Mondays star, who is skating alongside professional Angela Egan, is getting ready to perform in the show’s opening episode this Sunday 16 January.

However, he’s the first to admit that it’s not been smooth-sailing during rehearsals for his first routine on the ice.

Speaking to OK! and other press outlets, the 57 year old musician, who is joining the likes of Love Island's Liberty Poole and Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, explained: “I’ve been doing some spectacular falls, mostly involving my head crashing into the ice. I wear a helmet, so nothing too serious.”

Bez, who has also appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox alongside best mate Shaun Ryder, added: “I’ve had a few [injuries], nothing major, but I’m quite bruised and battered.”

However, always one to look on the bright side, Bez says he’s enjoying every minute of the ITV show and that he’s amazed at how far he’s come since signing up.

He told us: “I've loved the training. I actually wake up every day looking forward to getting out there on the ice. I've had great coaches, I've got a great dancing partner and, honestly, it's been so much fun to do.“

“I’ve actually got a bit better this week. I only fell over once yesterday so things are improving.”

Bez continued: “When I first got on the ice, I couldn't skate whatsoever and now I can't believe what I'm actually doing.”

Meanwhile, his fellow celebrity skater Brendan Cole said injuries and accidents are all part and parcel of the experience.

The Strictly Come Dancing star explained: “The beauty of Dancing on Ice is that we’re all falling. We’re all taking tumbles. When you push yourself, like we all are getting ready for the live shows, you’re going to have accidents. They happen constantly.”

This comes after the show’s host Phillip Schofield aired his concerns about Bez’s skating abilities, as he recalled watching a video of him falling over during rehearsals.

Phil, who presents alongside his ‘TV wife’ Holly Willoughby, described the series as having a ‘real danger’ element.

The 59 year old then added: “I’ve just watched a video of Bez on his second day fall over backwards so hard that his helmet flew off.”

“It’s one of those things that you don’t see on Strictly. Dancing On Ice is really dangerous. They really all risk everything for it.”

“We’ve seen in the past that people do get hurt and, of course, you want to avoid that at all cost. I think we will be wrapping Bez up in bubble wrap, that’s for sure.”
