Coronation Street: The Barlow’s interrogate Peter
Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has teased who is returning for another year of explosive storylines, including someone who has been away for a while.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Iain opened up on what is to come over the next couple of months for the soap and which familiar faces will be returning.
Bethany Platt
Being part of one of the most iconic families in Weatherfield, Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) will be thrown into the middle of a chaotic love quadrangle.
As it stands, Daisy Midgeley (played by Charlotte Jordan) and Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) are having an affair, with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) starting to work out something is wrong.
Before she left to train as a journalist, Bethany and Daniel had a brief fling, something which Iain teased could resurface.
He explained: “Bethany’s obviously got lots of history with Daniel, and that very much sharpens Daisy’s focus in terms of how she feels about Daniel.
“Suddenly this guy that she may have been starting to move away from, possibly by force of will, there’s a romantic threat on the cards and that recalibrates how she feels about the whole enterprise.
“It’s going to run deep into next year as all these unresolved feelings are buried but like all good buried feelings, they all come back to the surface with a bang or two across the following twelve months.”

Damon Hay
Damon Hay (Ciaran Griffiths) was last seen in Weatherfield a couple of months ago when he and Sara Platt (Tina O’Brien) had an affair, leaving Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) heartbroken.
Things went from bad to worse when Adam found out that Sarah had lied about who their baby’s father was, ending their marriage and running Damon out of town.
Now, Damon is set to return to the cobbles with a revenge plan for Adam and another to get Sarah back.
Iain said: “Adam finds himself in this nightmarish situation all at the hands of Damon, who’s unexpectedly come back. And in our minds, has been somewhere away from Coronation Street plotting his revenge.
“The story becomes a kind of love triangle where Damon, we also imagine has been spending his intervening months pining for Sarah.
“The first of them is that he wants to get his revenge on Adam and the second of them is that he wants Sarah back because he feels like she’s the one.
“And he will essentially have to contend with the fact that these two plans might not be compatible, like can he have his revenge and also have Sarah?”

Linda Hancock
Linda Hancock (Jacqueline Leonard) returned for a brief stint earlier this year and attempted to help Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) and Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) with their money issues.
However, after feeling unwanted and under their feet, she decided to leave but her return is set to put strain on the family once again.
Iain revealed: “Joseph’s fairy godmother turns up in the shape of Linda. She decides that she’s going to fix Joseph’s school troubles, and starts throwing money at the situation, which puts Chesney and Gemma in this impossible quandary.
“It doesn’t feel right that Linda is wading in with her chequebook and saving the day. But on the other side of it, they have to prioritise what’s right for Joseph, who is having a hard time and could do with the support.
“It’s a lot of fun in places but we were trying to tell a very realistic story about family dynamics. It’s interesting because Gemma is not Joseph’s biological mother so there are tensions around that.
“Does Chesney side with Joseph and Linda and biology? Or does he side more with Gemma? His relationship with Gemma is quite fractured.”
Tommy Orpington
During his time on the street, Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn) became friends with both Michelle Connor’s (Kym Marsh) husband Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and his business partner Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine), igniting a feud between the pair.
However, after an accident whilst playing football in the street, Tommy was struck off from work for six months and as a result, he and his fiancée decided to fire Michelle as their wedding planner.
Iain teased that Tommy’s on his way back to the cobbles in a very different stage of life, and for a longer stay – and it will lead to a surprising romance.
“He’s now had to return to the trade he had when he was a non-league footballer, which is painter and decorator and, significantly, he is now single. There might be one of our female characters that needs some decorating done, not a euphemism.
“There’s basically a story that evolves where this attractive, successful historically man arrives into one of our female character’s life and upsets the apple cart in fairly spectacular fashion, shall we say?
“It’s very funny but potentially quite sad in certain places. It triggers something really big for us over the next 12 months, a big new direction for some characters so yeah, Tommy Orpington will finally be coming off the subs bench.”
Harvey Gaskell
Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) is currently doing a stint in prison after he killed Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac) last year on Halloween.
He is also the brother of Damon but the pair are feuding enemies and have never seen eye to eye, with Adam taking full advantage of their hatred for one another.
Iain revealed: “It’s a brilliant, exciting, high-octane story. I love those characters. They always feel sort of really glossy and really naturally at home in this kind of big Coronation Street storyline.
“Adam decides in his mind that to protect Sarah, he might want rid of Damon. So as Damon’s calming down and Adams going into the direction and his plans to rid himself of Damon
“We’ll see him pay a little visit to Damon’s half-brother Harvey because he’s no fan of Damon’s either. They have a shared problem in the form of Damon and think they can help each other in that regard.
“So it’s yeah, it’s got fantastic actors in it as all stories do. The storyline is packed full of twists and turns and excitement.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
