Coronation Street could be axed within 10 years, says ITV and cobbles icon
19th November 2022

Former Coronation Street actor Charlie Lawson has opened up about what he thinks the future holds for the hit ITV soap as "viewing habits" continue to change.

The 63 year old actor played Jim McDonald on the soap from 1989 until 2000 and has returned on a number of occasions throughout the years, with Jim's most recent appearance on Coronation Street being back in 2018.

Jim, who is the ex-husband of Liz McDonald (played by Beverley Callard) and is the father of Steve (Simon Gregson) and Andy (Nicholas Cochrane), was jailed for committing armed robbery and is still serving his jail sentence.

Charlie has now revealed that he thinks Corrie could be axed in the next 10 years, as streaming services continue to take over.

The actor told Daily Star: “I was there in the 90s for 11 years and we were getting between 16 and 20 million – and 5 million (viewers now) is not a lot.

“In 10 years who knows if we will have a Coronation Street. We’re all changing our viewing habits as it is already."

He then went on to claim the ITV soap will continue to lose viewers if it keeps featuring 'politically correct' storylines.

Currently on Coronation Street, Max Turner (Paddy Bever) is being groomed by far-right extremists, after being targeted by a gang led by leader Griff in a hard-hitting storyline.

“People are getting a little bit gobsmacked and fed up with all this,” Charlie added.

The 63 year old then told the publication that he isn't expecting to receive a call from Corrie producers any time soon asking for Jim to return, as the character isn't "woke".

He said: “Jim wasn’t exactly politically correct, never mind woke!”

Charlie last returned to the cobbles in 2018, with his character making a surprise return alongside his supposed long lost daughter from his relationship Liz.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights on ITV.
